News of the Meeting of January 19th:

Today, our visiting speaker was Gracemarie Horan-Luce, a Life & Health Agent and Senior Healthcare Specialist, who spoke to us about Medicare and the multitude of options available once we are eligible for this program. Before providing examples of these options, Gracemarie handed out some informational pages, paper to take notes on, and even pens to jot down our thoughts and questions. She pointed out that NY State has a special program, E.P.I.C., that provides financial assistance to pay for medications if residents need such assistance (though it isn't available to veterans or if one is a member of a retirement plan). Gracemarie explained that Medicare Part A is Hospital Insurance that covers the costs associated with confinement in a hospital or skilled nursing facility. Her first handout which informed us about Part A was explained. It presented information about What Medicare Covers when you are hospitalized for 1-60 days, 61-90 days, 91-150 days, and beyond- and what you can expect to pay out of pocket for each amount of days. An explanation was also provided about Medicare coverage for persons undergoing "skilled nursing confinement" following inpatient hospital stays, based on the number of days and the copayment costs after 20 days. The 2nd handout dealt with Medicare Part B, which is Medical Insurance that covers physician services, outpatient care, medical tests, and supplies. Again, explanations were given about the Annual Deductible and What Medicare Covers as well as What You Pay for each type of service provided (ie., clinical laboratory services are usually 100% paid). GraceMarie also spoke about HMO's and PPO's and what they cover, the Open Enrollment Period (10/15- 12/7), the 19 drug companies you have to choose from -involving much research on your part, the prescription co-payment "donut hole", and the like. While deciding on which type of Medicare coverage and supplementary providers will best suit your needs is an extremely complex matter, there are specialists like Gracemarie who can provide, at no cost to you, help in making these choices. And you can always go to medicare.gov for information and explanations, as well. In her final remarks, Gracemarie pointed out that we are lucky, because NY has the best medical coverage possibilities in the country.

ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: Next week, 1/26, we'll welcome as our visiting speaker Larry Hohler, who will provide us with an update on the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru, Kenya. THE POT,WHICH STOOD AT $47, was won today by a jubilant Bill Curry! We start over next week with a new pot. Ya gotta be in it to win it!. Archana announced that there'll be New Officer Training on Saturday, March 5th, 12-5PM, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Plainview. She also noted that the Multi-District PETS will take place March 18-19 in Whippany, NJ. The next Executive Board Meeting will take place this Thursday, 1/21, at 11:45-12:45 in Nancy's office. Reminder: our next Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Cleanup Day will be May 15th. We'll again share this opportunity with the Rocky Point and Middle Island Clubs. Dennis hopes to help arrange for a special meeting at which time Marcella Weiss, a special Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck supporter, can be present and honored with a Paul Harris Award.The Town of Brookhaven's Women's Advisory Council invites you to nominate a Brookhaven resident or worker who deserves to be honored at the Town's 2016 Women's Recognition Night, on 3/16 at Town Hall. Award categories and nomination forms can be found at the Town's website. The deadline for nominations is 1/22. Sharon has been in touch to say that she was planning to attend a Rotary meeting while vacationing in Carolina. Bob Huttemeyer is still calling for future speakers. Kindly volunteer yourself or others who would be interesting future Rotary guests.
