Today, Archana spoke to us about the growing problem of Financial Exploitation of Senior Citizens (and others). Noting that more than 50 million Americans aged 62 and older have become prime targets for financial exploitation by both people they know and trust as well as strangers, she referred to this as "the crime of the 21st century". According to one study of this problem, our older citizens lost at least $2.9 billion to a wide spectrum of scammers in 2010. Many of the fraud cases are complex and are difficult to investigate and prosecute. Elders who lose their life savings to exploiters usually are unable to regain monies lost. As a result, they often lose, too, the ability to live independently, and may experience a decline in health, broken trust, and fractured families. Archana reported that awareness of the problem and attempts at prevention are essential to protecting elders. Among the most common types of elder financial exploitation: fiduciary abuse by person(s) with Power of Attorney (ie., theft of money or property, investment fraud, and offer of fraudulent financial services or products); abuse by care-givers and in-home helpers; lottery and sweepstake scams; and telephone scams. Archana enumerated reasons why older adults are especially vulnerable to exploitation, including that they tend to have regular income and accumulated assets, may be too trusting and polite, or lonely and socially isolated, or that they may be grieving the loss of a spouse, family member, friend, or pet, and are thus emotionally weak enough to be preyed upon. Also, these seniors tend to be reluctant to report exploitation by someone they know and depend on for fear of losing support and, thus, their own independence. Archana next provided examples of common schemes to defraud such as sweepstakes scams requiring processing fees to collect winnings, identity theft, reverse mortgage trickery, and contractor and home improvement scams. What can we do if we learn that an elderly person has been victimized? We should contact Adult Protective Services ( a part of county or state department of social services) or the US Administration on Aging to report the fraud. In the case of identity theft, contact your local police and the Federal Trade Commission.

Michael will be running this meeting. Archana reported that this past Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck CleanUp Day was a great success and thanked all who participated. There were 3 different Rotary clubs represented (76 members) as well as Interactors and Boy Scouts who performed their assigned chores very well under Dennis' direction (including a lot of our Corporate Members. Club service activities tend to bring people out!) Kudos, especially, to Dennis for his excellent planning (and ability to be flexible when change is called for)! You are invited to attend the District Training Assembly on 5/21 (8:30 AM-4:00 PM)to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Melville (located on the east side of Round Swamp Rd., just south of the LIE exit 48 in Plainview). Incoming DG MJ Fitzgerald will lead the Assembly. All costs will be paid by the District. We now have a Habitat Build date: Saturday, July 16th. Members are invited to take part along with family & friends. The cost will be $100 ($50 paid by the club and $50 by the participant). Place, time, and instructions TBA. You should have received by email a request from Archana asking you to update your personal information and return this to her by Friday, 5/20.Contact Archana if you have questions. Please note that we will be having an evening meeting on Thursday, 6/23 at Mather Hospital. There will be NO MEETING on the preceding Tuesday, 6/21. We look forward to welcoming a new Corporate Membership: the Port Jefferson Free Library! Raffle Time is fast approaching- Get Ready! Our 2016 Past President's Dinner & Raffle Drawing will take place on September 22nd (SAVE THAT DATE!)at Carnival Restaurant in Port Jeff Station. MJ Fitzgerald,our incoming DG, invites you to her Installation Dinner on June 23rd at 6:30PM at Royalton Mansion in Roslyn Heights. The cost will be $85 p/p. Please let Archana know if you're interested in attending. The 9/17 Dragon Boat Race: We still need the commitment of 20 Row-tarians (10 of them women) by June 6th, when the payment is due. Please contact Archana or Debbie if you can participate in this enjoyable event on our club team. (*Note: if you learn at the last minute that you cannot take part, you are responsible for finding a replacement- not necessarily a Rotarian.) You are invited to the Great Annual Shredding Party that Michael sponsors with Saranto Calamas and Eric Cherches. The date: June 4th. Time: 10:30 AM- 1:30 PM. Place: the parking lot at 640 Belle Terre Rd. (across from Mather). Delicious food will be served along with wine, beer, and music while the shredding is being accomplished.
