News of the Meeting of June 29th

Rob hosted today's meeting at Cafe Spiga and was joined by 11 other members and a guest, Daphne Dzvonar, daughter of Jen & Will.  This was a Club Assembly meeting- an opportunity for announcements and also socializing. ** Please note that next week, July 6th, we will not be meeting, giving all an opportunity to more fully enjoy holiday-related activities.**

Rob reminded us that our Golf Outing is September 12th and that the Golf Committee will meet via Zoom tomorrow, June 30th, at 8 AM.  Whether or not you are a committee member, you are invited to attend and participate in event preparation activities.  Contact Mike S. for the Zoom link.

Our RAFFLE DRAWING will take place on August 3rd  at a time and place TBA.  Jen reports that the Raffle Ticket Sales are coming along beautifully.  Please note that Judi has already turned in more than 200 stubs and plans to have sold more than 300 tickets by August 3rd !

Jen also reminds us about the upcoming Wednesday summer concerts that will take place from 6-8 PM in the Port Jeff Sta./Terryville Chamber of Commerce Train Car Park:  On July 14th, the theme is Hawaiian, there'll be a Frontline Worker Tribute, and 1 Step Ahead will provide the music.  On July 21st, it'll be Ice Cream Night, with a BMX Stunt Show, and music provided by School of Rock, Port Jefferson.  On July 28th, it's Veterans' Night, with music performed by Just Sixties- the longest running Sixties tribute in the U.S.  These are free events.  Please bring your own chair.  Social Distancing Rules will apply.

Rob and Deb remind members that our club has bought a table at the July 24th Hope Children's Fund Gala at The Inn at Eastwind, and that the Table of 8 can always be extended to a Table of 12 (or more?).  See the event invitation below.  If you are interested in joining our club's table, contact Deb for further info., including how to place a business ad in the Gala Journal.

Judi invites you to attend the Benjamin Tallmadge District, Suffolk County Council BSA fundraiser: A BEEFSTEAK DINNER! on Thursday, July 15th, 7-11 PM, at The Old Field Club.  The cost is $110 p/p in advance ($130 at the door):  "In January 2008, The New York Times did a feature article about a richly historic New York event that started over a century ago.  Back in the mid-1800's, special "Beefsteak" dinners were held as political fundraisers.  The events were held primarily for men, and photos survive showing the attendees dressed in their best tuxedos, complete with white aprons and chef hats.  The aprons were necessary since the meal was served without silverware.  Course after course was served and gluttony was encouraged.
After 1920, When Women's Suffrage was passed and the Tammany political machine started losing its influence, the tradition waned in New York, but it moved across the river to New Jersey, where more than 1,000 such events are still held each year.  Primarily a community event, the Beafsteak is similar to Foreign Legion Fish Fries, Pancake Breakfasts, Fish Boils, and Pig Roasts.
Our local district for the Suffolk County Boy Scouts Council decided a few years ago that its members and benefactors might enjoy this type of event, and they did.  We'll have plenty of steak, sliders, crab, cheese, lamb chops, and more...and yes, they're designed to be eaten by hand (and yes, we have aprons for you!)"  MENU:  Cheese-shrimp-crabmeat, lamb chops- aged angus beef, local micro brews- Maker's Mark Bourbon- cigars.
Attendance is limited to the 1st 100 people.  Please make your reservation early.  Mail your check to SCCBSA: 7 Scouting Blvd., Medford, NY 11763, Att'n: Bobby Rabbitt.  Include your name, # of people attending, email address, and phone number. (Payments are tax deductible as provided by the Internal Revenue Code.)

Dennis shared Thank You Notes from Vicki Rybak (The Open Cupboard) and Barbara Lynch (3 Village Meals On Wheels).  Deb received a Thank You Note from the Comsewogue HS Scholarship recipient, who she will invite to attend one of our future meetings.

Nancy reminds us all that 2021-22 membership dues are now due!

Deb & Yvette again offered an opportunity to help both Hope Children's Fund and oneself by purchasing a "No Give Back 50/50 Raffle" for $5 per ticket or a book of 5 tickets for $20.  The drawing will take place at the Hope Children's Fund Gala on July 24th at the East Wind in Wading River, and the winner need not be present

Judi reminds us that one of our Raffle Awards is a Large Wine Basket.  As we did last year, our members donated a bottle to fill the basket.  You may bring your bottle donation to a meeting before August 3rd or drop it at Judi's home.

Sharon was "our lovely Sergeant" today.  She deftly stumped a number of our members as she asked questions about Gift of Life.  Did you know that it was founded 46 years ago (1975) here on LI (Manhasset Rotary Club)?
Sharon also collected a number of Happy/Sad Dollars.

Bob H. reported that Kathy Taveira's mom recently passed away.

Jen is going to PA with Daphne & Will for another BMX competition.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Cindy!!!
