Today, Rob hosted a regular meeting at Cafe Spiga, joined by 14 other club members. Our guests included Kylie Schlosser, Comsewogue 9th grader and Most Motivated Student of the Month Honoree; Mrs. Christa Schlosser, Kylie's mother; and Andrew Harris, teacher and Advisor to School Clubs. This was also an OPEN CUPBOARD DAY. Thank you, members who brought donations, and Dennis, who collected and delivered them to their destination (and to Bill, who came to help with the delivery)! Among the announcements: Yvette invited members to attend the Celebration of Larry Hohler's Life (Jan. 30, 1943- May 13, 2022) to be held on Sunday, July 17th, from 4-8 PM, at The Village Center's Sail Loft- 3rd floor, overlooking the harbor. This should be a joy-filled occasion with live entertainment and opportunities to reminisce and share "Larry stories". There will be a "pot luck" cold meal (ie., mostly finger foods) provided by guests and (sorry!) NON-alcoholic beverages provided by the hosts. Tech-friendly friends will, hopefully, help set up a Zoom option so that folks unable to attend in person can still participate. (If you are musically talented, or if you'd like to share a poem, a story, a photo, etc., please contact Yvette at your earliest convenience.) RSVP by July 10th. A number of our club members will be attending this evening's ( June 14th) Town of Brookhaven special event at The Meadow Club (Port Jeff Sta.), which begins at 6 PM. Club member Judy Betts will be among the honorees at the 36th Annual Brookhaven Women's Advisory Council Awards Night. She will be receiving the award for Volunteer of the Year. (The Women's Advisory Council was created by Edna Gerrard.) Tomorrow evening, the Gift of Life Dinner will be held at Flowerfield in St. James, beginning at 6 PM. Several of our members, including Jenn, will represent our club as they attend this special Rotary event. Deb presented our Annual Senior Scholarship Award to the Comsewogue HS recipient last week. Rebecca did the same at Port Jeff HS, presenting the Rotary Senior Scholarship and the Annual Interact Award. She was especially impressed by a Lion's Club presentation meant to keep their scholarship recipients active in college/community events beyond high school graduation. Rebecca suggested that we also consider offering a $ incentive to our award recipients who continue to perform future "service above self" activities (ie., by joining -or forming-a Rotaract Club). Village residents: please remember to vote next Tuesday, 6/21, at the Village Center. (Rebecca is running for a 2nd term as Village Trustee. Hint! Hint!) Jenn announced the Port Jeff Station/Terryville Chamber of Commerce-sponsored "Summer Concert Wednesdays", FREE events from 6-8 PM, at the newly refurbished Chamber Train Car Park. Bring a chair. July 6th: "Veterans Night"- SouthBound and Keepin' it Country. July 13th: "Paint Night"- Paige Patterson. July 20th: "Luau Night"- Step Ahead July 27th: "Ice Cream Night"- BMX Stunt Show & School of Rock, Port Jefferson, NY Aug. 3rd: " Shakespeare in the Park": "The Taming of the Shrew" Visit PJSTChamber.com or call 631-821-1313 for more info. Rob announced unofficially probable July meeting activities when Mike Burghardt takes over as our President. Stay tuned. Comsewogue High's Andrew Harris spoke about his admiration for Rotarians, whose nature is to give. In presenting Kylie Schlosser to us, Andrew explained why this 9th grader was so deserving of this month's Most Motivated Student Award: She is an outstanding, independent young lady- and the most positive person he has ever met. Kylie is willing to say "yes" to nearly everything, which is why she is picked to attend all sorts of civic meetings as a representative of her school or class. She says she loves attending these meetings because she feels she learns a lot from them. Kylie is always eager to learn. She epitomizes the words, "Most Motivated Student". Jenn was our Masterful Sergeant today. She stumped us all with her questions about the specialness of today: It's Flag Day (ie., Do you know on what day our flag is flown at half staff and then raised at noon to its full height?- Ans.: Memorial Day.) Jen gave us a wonderful history lesson about our flag, interspersed with questions about who did what and when concerning the stars and stripes. Many Happy Dollars (mostly in honor of our Most Motivated Student) and some Sad Dollars (in memory of Larry Hohler) were collected. Tomorrow is Rebecca's birthday. She chose Deb to sing to her. Deb was terrific. And then Becky allowed our members to sing to her in our habitual fashion. We were terrific, too. (If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.) |
