News of the Meeting of March 9th


 
Rob hosted today's hybrid meeting with 5 members attending in person at Cafe Spiga and 9 members joining via Zoom.  Unfortunately, our guests from Comsewogue HS had to cancel their visit and will be rescheduled for a future gathering, at which time we will honor their Most Motivated Student of the Month.
 
Nancy requested that members who owe money for Sergeant's Report fines kindly pay their January/February fees in person, by check (P.O. Box 461, %Port Jeff Rotary, Port Jefferson 11777), in cash- whatever suits you- as soon as possible.
 
Kim invites all to sign up to participate in our Virtual Bingo Night Fundraiser that will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, March 31st, from 7-8 PM.  Interested?  Sign up for 1 Bingo card at $20, 2 cards for $40, 3 cards for $50 ($10 savings!), 4 cards for $80, or 6 cards for $100 ($20 savings!).  Four games will be played using the same card(s).  Proceeds benefit Theater Three and our club.  The prizes: $20 -$50 gift cards. Al recently had knee replacement surgery at a hospital in Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks and reports that he was walking shortly after the surgery.  Now back home, he has just started physical therapy.  Here's to a speedy, complete recovery, Al!  Cheers!
 
Today was an Open Cupboard Collection Day.  Dennis thanked our generous donors-especially Dawn and Al, who filled up Dennis' car with their donations.  And thank you, Dennis, for again collecting and delivering the goods to their destination!
 
Rob reminds our members that they can still get in on the Sceiford Baby Pool- but hurry! There are already 17 entries.
 
Rob is holding a meeting at 7 PM tonight re. our upcoming fundraising efforts, including the golf outing.  Care to join? Contact Rob A.S.A.P. for the Zoom invitation to attend.
 
Pat is going to try to get a wood chipper in order to perform another cleanup at the Chandler Estate Park. Volunteers are welcome to join in this enterprise on Sunday, April 11th, beginning at 8 AM and any time thereafter.  Among the chores to be accomplished:  Brush clearing and bench creation.  Bring friends & family.  The more, the merrier!
 
John Perkins invites you to participate in the Blood Drive taking place at St. Catherine's in Smithtown tonight 'til 8 PM.  If you are unable to participate this evening, consider the following:  St. Charles Hospital is hosting a Blood Drive Wednesday, March 17th, from 7 AM to 6 PM in the Wisdom Conference Center at 200 Belle Terre Rd.  John reminds us that Covid-19 has created a chronic deficit of blood.  Every donation helps.  Please register to donate by calling the Public Affairs Office at 1-800-933-2566 or 1-646-739-1827.  For further info/questions, call Tina Murano at 631-474-6251.  Appointments are preferred.  Walk-ins are welcome if drive capacity permits. [Donors: -must wear a mask or face covering;-will have temperature taken; -must be 14 days symptom free if recovered from Covid-19;- may not donate if tested positive or experienced Covid symptoms in past 14 days; - may not donate if currently on self-quarantine restrictions.]
 
Yvette reminded members of the upcoming Hope Children's Fund event- a "Save This Date" request:  July 21, 2021.  See below for the details.
 
Michael S. was our very effective Sergeant today, stumping many members- some multiple times- with questions pertaining to International Women's Day.  We learned a lot.  He also collected many Happy Dollars and a few Sad ones, too.  Bravo, Mike!

SAVE THE DATE: You are invited to attend the 4th Annual (2021 version) "Passion for Education Gala" to benefit the Hope Children's Fund, Ltd., on Saturday, JULY 24th, 6 PM-11 PM, at The Inn & Spa at East Wind in Wading River.  Join the celebrants for an evening of live music by X-Session, a cocktail hour, a plated dinner, raffles, and silent auction- all supporting the education of the children of the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru, Kenya. You are invited to become a member of the Port Jeff Village Community Garden Committee, which has already begun meeting and is in its planning stages for the village's 1st such project to be achieved on village parkland in upper Port. The garden is expected to elevate the sense of place for residents and visitors, and will undoubtedly be supported by the local business community.  The garden will provide a space for residents to grow their own local produce.  The Community Garden Committee, which already includes some of our club members- Sal and Rebecca- is seeking other members with experience related to gardening, who have an interest in community outreach, nutrition, and food security, who can attend 2-3 online meetings per month (approx. 1 hour each) and occasional on-site meetings, who can perform independent tasks/research/outreach between meetings (approx. 2 hours per week), and who are able to commit at least 1 year on the committee.  Interested?  Contact trustee-kassay@portjeff.com.
 
Rebecca invites us to get acquainted with HOMETOWNHOPEPORTJEFFERSON.ORG. Hometown Hope provides resources and support in times of need to all residents of the Village by promoting a movement of spreading kindness. It "strives to uplift through wellness, resilience, and compassionate understanding in our community."  Among the services/goods it will provide: meal boxes; home deliveries; and the like for those suffering illness, loss, etc., as well as help for healthcare practitioners during the pandemic. You can also sponsor a family.
