News of the Meeting of October 25th:

Today, our visiting speaker was Ed Gould, Chapter Chair for SCORE.  Ed is a retired entrepreneur from Huntington who serves as one of over 13,000 volunteers for this country-wide, non-profit association that is dedicated to educating current and future entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed.  (SCORE has been mentoring small business owners for more than 50 years and has its national headquarters in Hearndon, VA.) Most mentors, like himself, have owned or started their own businesses, been successful, and now, in retirement, look forward to helping others by sharing their expertise. SCORE has 14 branches on LI and is seeking more volunteers-perhaps younger mentors, who may still have contacts and still be in business. They would be joining the other volunteers who already provide free, confidential advice to new or existing LI businesses, acting as a resource partner of the US Small Business Administration. SCORE volunteers do what they do to give back to the community. They offer, in addition to one-on-one mentoring services (Ed's favorite), local workshops- usually at public libraries, as well as online workshops and business plan basics on how to start up, run, and grow businesses of all sorts.  Their advice/guidance can deal with financing, marketing, management, best use of technology, and legal matters. Or some clients may simply need someone impartial to bounce ideas off of and will seek SCORE mentors for this purpose. Ed's local SCORE branch is located at 350 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge. He is looking for volunteers to train as well as businesses to mentor.  For a wealth of information on this agency and the possibilities it offers, check out longisland.score.org or contact Ed directly (631-586-4000 or via edwardsgould@gmail.com).
Thank you, Michael, for running the meeting today.
