News of the Meeting of July 11th

Today, our visiting speaker was Pam Block, a Cultural Anthropologist and Professor of Disability Studies at SUNYSB, who spoke to us as a member of the Board of Quality Parks, where she is able to pursue her passionate involvement in environmental education, especially in making our parks accessible to disabled people. Quality Parks, a 501c3 nonprofit that is home based in Port Jefferson, advocates for public access to open spaces and water as well as best practices for public lands management. This is a hands-on agency that has been offering a variety of conservation and educational programs since 2000. Quality Parks works with hundreds of local organizations to extend their outreach and community service engagement. Pam's discussion today was actually about the importance of planting native plants and replacing invasive species with them to better protect our environment and preserve biodiversity. Creating a native garden helps nurture and sustain the living landscape for birds and other animals, provides a means of gradually collecting rain that soaks into the ground, and presents an opportunity to teach children (and others) about animal and plant life thriving in their native habitat. Among the benefits of a native garden: they require less water and don't need fertilizer; they increase native insects, bees, and pollinators; they increase birds, which feed on seeds, insects, and fruit; they increase wildlife viewing opportunities; and they educate gardeners about nature's cycles. Where should we plant native species? We should fill public open spaces, golf courses, and commercial and residential land parcels with them. Start by knowing plant requirements, soil conditions, and the amount of sun or shade needed for these plants. Visit the Quality Parks web site (www.qualityparks.org) for information and suggestions on where to obtain native plants and on how to start and maintain native gardens for the betterment of our environment.

This was also an OPEN CUPBOARD COLLECTION DAY. Thank you donors, and, especially, Dennis & Jim for delivering the goods to their destination.

ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: There's now $689 in the pot waiting to be won- with only a dozen or so cards left to draw from. Yes, the Ace of Spades is still among them , but a Joker lurks in the pile, as well. It could be YOU who wins the pot. Next opportunity: our 7/18 luncheon at Cafe Spiga, when our visiting speaker, John Gallo, will talk about "History in a Box". We will also get to meet Eve Milusich, the PJHS recipient of our $1,000 Rotary Community Service Award. Eve will be accompanied by her French teacher, Ms. Pisano, who helped her start a new club at the high school. How are your sales of Raffle Tickets going? Susan looks forward to collecting your ticket stubs and the money folks used to purchase tickets from you. Keep selling 'em! Michael passed around photos of a few Hope Children's Home residents (in Meru, Kenya) that accompanied a "thank you note " from The Hope Children's Fund for the club's generous donation of $500. Yvette gave a brief update on HCF activities. Tom noted that he hopes to have a volunteer program set up for us soon to work with residents at the Woodhaven Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. He will also try to provide us with a list of events occurring there so that we can visit on our own. Perhaps a pen pal program can be established with the residents in addition to a calendar of birthdays so that we can send greetings cards to them. Deb reported that Ed's family is settling in well at their new Florida home, and that their neighbors seem to be welcoming and friendly. Bill thanked the Stuff-A-Van volunteers for a job well done. Two vans were filled with donations for delivery to The Open Cupboard. ***SAVE THIS DATE, please: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th: the date of our ANNUAL PAST PRESIDENTS DINNER & RAFFLE DRAWING (& celebration of the 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLUB's FOUNDING !).This auspicious event will take place at Savino's Hideaway, corner of North Country & Pipe Stave Hollow Roads in Mt. Sinai. More info will be forthcoming soon. Sharon is busily planning Susan's Going Away Party. (SIGH!) It will take place at Cafe Spiga on either Monday, 8/14 or 8/21. Of course, all are invited to attend. More info will be shared as soon as the event planning is finalized. Kevin asks if YOU would be interested in the revival of the club's Annual Ski Trip. (You need not ski to participate.) Let him know of your interest, and he might pursue arranging such an event. Dennis announced that the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck leaf blower has been purchased and paid for. He will provide a list of donors soon. ***He also spoke about Southold Rotary's August 30th golf tournament that will benefit the camp, Eastern LI Hospital, and other Rotary Service Projects. The outing will take place at Island's End Golf & Country Club in East Marion, beginning with a 1 PM Shotgun Start. The $132.50 donation (based on 2 foursomes) with check made out to Port Jefferson Rotary Club Foundation pays for :a goody bag; green fees & golf cart; driving range/free range balls; all club facilities; lunch starting at 11:30 AM; fellowship after golf- 2 hour open bar with appetizers beginning at 5:30 PM; delicious dinner buffet with dessert and coffee; prizes; beer,soft drinks, & water served on the course; ice cold clams on the half shell; and special raffles. All participating clubs providing foursomes are eligible to compete for the coveted "Challenge Cup". Contact Dennis before 8/1 if you're interested.

Bob is still seeking evening meeting places, 1 per month. Contact him if you can provide a meeting site.
