President Mike B. was joined today at Cafe Spiga by 11 other members plus our guest speaker, Joelle Kronberg, who represents Career & Employment Options, her assistant, Christina Carroll, and Daphne Dzvonar, daughter of Jenn. President Mike began today's meeting by reminding us that this is Membership Month. Our newest member, Mark Snyder, who is being sponsored br Michael Sceiford, will be inducted soon- probably early September. An induction party will be planned for him, and it is hoped that he will be bringing family members to join in the celebration. Sharon updated us on the Past President's Dinner (honoring Rob Dooley) at Savino's on September 29th, when festivities will begin at 5 PM with a cocktail hour. So far we have 33 people signed up to attend, including member spouses/guests. Please RSVP to Sharon if you haven't yet done so. Dues-paying members are entitled to attend with a guest for free, while Corporate Members will have to choose a member to represent them. Others pay $60 to attend this event. All guests are welcome. Our ANNUAL RAFFLE DRAWING will take place at this dinner! Jenn asks: How many Raffle Tickets have you sold? She still has packets of tickets to give out. If you haven't received yours yet, please contact her to arrange for a delivery. If you need extras, also let Jenn know. Remember that each member is expected to sell at least his/her 25 tickets. There'll be a prize for the member who sells the most tickets. Judi is still ill and would certainly welcome your healing thoughts- and cards, too! She will be moved from Mather to a rehab facility in St. James. Meanwhile, Cindy will try to engage Judi, our champion raffle ticket seller, obtain her list of past purchasers, and urge/help her to sell her tickets for the benefit of Rotary, which we know she loves dearly. The Rotary Club of Rocky Point invites you all to consider participating in Hope Children's Fund's 18th Annual KENYA/USA Bi-Continental 5K Run/Walk that will take place on Sunday, October 16th. This event, now named The Larry Hohler Memorial, will be an occasion to compete against Kenyans who will be running/walking simultaneously on the other side of the world in Meru, Kenya. Here, it will begin at 10 AM at the Port Jeff Station end of the Port Jefferson Station-Setauket Greenway Trail. (Enter the parking lot at the Hallock Ave. traffic light- between Enterprise Car Rental and the 7-11 on Rte.112.) Registration for the competition will begin between 9:00- 9:30 AM at the western end of the parking lot and the trail's beginning. There is a suggested donation of $30.* Runners/walkers who can secure more than $100 in pledges can participate for free. On September 20th, Lee Silberman of Habitat for Humanity will be our visiting speaker. Mike suggested that this might be an occasion to honor Bill Jaeger, who was especially fond of Habitat. We could invite his family to attend and hold a special ceremony in Bill's memory. Mike will contact John Perkins, who has been in charge of our most recent Habitat Builds. Mike will also go ahead with the plan suggested last week and will order Rotary stickers and small magnetic Rotary signs for placement on our autos to show our pride in Rotary membership. The Port Jeff Chamber of Commerce is asking our members to volunteer to help out/work at the 9/17 Dragon Boat Races. Contact the Chamber if you're interested. Dennis announced that The Open Cupboard will soon be sharing with us its new list of needs for the fall. Mike reported that we are being awarded a District Grant, but a smaller amount than that requested. The Rotary Club of Southampton invites you to its "Night at the Rogers Mansion" on Thursday, 8/25 from 5:30-8 PM. It begins at the Southampton History Museum, 17 Meeting House Lane, Southampton. Among the activities: the appearance of World Class Mentalist, Kevin Nicholas; Professionally Drawn Caricatures; Open Bar & hors d'oeuvres; and Tours of the Rogers Mansion grounds and New Exhibit. Today Sergeant Kevin posed the questions that brought in the $$$ for each wrong answer. He began with a Rotary History Quiz: Remember when Rotary was founded? (1905) In what city? (Chicago) When were the first women admitted? (1987) In what place? (California). Next he asked what National Day (having to do with alcohol) is celebrated today. Happy National Rum Day, y'all! Happy Dollars were collected mostly to celebrate the great weather and our visitors. There were some sad dollars,too. Al had both happy and sad dollars: happy to be going away (to South Carolina) and sad because he won't be able to lead us in prayer next week. Sharon again picked the blue raffle ticket that won her the chance to pick a card from the deck and hope for the Ace of Spades to win the pot. Mike again introduced our guest speaker, Joelle Kronberg, Administrator of Marketing & School Business Partnerships at Career and Employment Options (CEO), and her Assistant, Christine Carroll. Both women took turns explaining what CEO is and what it does. Founded by Nicholas Villani in 2005, this company contracts with highschools across LI to create industry-education collaborations that work for students with special needs. Their School Business Partnerships (SBP) enable direct links between businesses /organizations and these "special ed" students, allowing the latter to intern, job shadow, and participate in programs that will prepare them for eventually entering the working world. The goals of SBP include: introducing prospective opportunities to these students who can go into trades or find alternative career pathways; providing internships and World of Work Tours to students of all abilities who may require specialized supports or entry level jobs; and providing for college-bound students opportunities for internships, job shadow experiences, and mentoring. The youngsters enrolled in this program are prepared to act professionally, no matter what employment they find (only 33% of post secondary students get jobs). They are taught socialization: how to get along with others- co-workers and bosses. Christine spoke about some of their student's current internships at a local Marriott Hotel, where they learn skills such as folding towels correctly. Among other thing, their CEO mentor works with them, models processes, teaches reliability, and creates a sense of trust. Joelle told about school/business partnerships, where job analysis, skill requirements, and realistic goals are assessed before students are invited to try out a job. The SBP would facilitate the internships in trades and in professional careers, would find local job openings, assess realistic goals, and prepare students to be recruited and eventually hired. First, there would be a task analysis (what are the business' workers actually doing?). The company (CEO) has ongoing feedback and is very data-driven. The goal is to make each student employable while seeking appropriate available internships and actual jobs for them. Apprenticeships are great opportunities for these students. CEO also works with seniors (the "elderly"). They have programs for adults in need of job training, where new skills are taught, among other things. Upward Options is a program that helps kids who are going to college and are often "on the spectrum". They are prepared to succeed in their studies and their social relationships and responsabilities. The President/Founder of CEO has written a manuel about the "Vocational Engagement Model". Meanwhile, Joelle has invited our business owners and employed persons to look into her company's programs and perhaps offer internship/job opportunities to the local students that CEO is preparing for joining the world of work. Nearly all of the local school districts have contracts with CEO. What is needed: employers who are willing/able to take a chance on a few of the students that CEO works with.
