Today, we welcomed and honored this month's Most Motivated Student at the PJ Middle School, 6th grader Narin Karakurum. Narin was accompanied by Ass't Sup't. for Curriculum & Instruction Christine Austin, Ass't. Sup't. for Business Sean Leister, Principal Dr. Bob Neidig, 6th grade special ed teacher Christina Carlson, and Narin's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Karakurum. Bob introduced Narin to his fellow-Rotarians. An excellent student with a GPA in the high 90's for the 1st two quarters, she is also well-appreciated by the faculty and staff of her school for her generous, sweet, and kind-hearted nature. Her science and coding teacher praises the fact that Narin goes above and beyond class requirements, seeks help when she has questions, and "brings her own background knowledge to the table when discussing different topics." This teacher cites the fact that during the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Narin "went out of her way on multiple days to bring in large boxes of food for those in need". Narin's writing teacher, her reading teacher, her math teacher, and Mrs. Carlson, who nominated Narin for this award, all laud her cheerful disposition, her being an active participant in class, her excellent work ethic, and her obvious desire to learn. Furthermore, Narin reaches out to help friends and peers and is seen as being mature and bright, yet humble. The Principal ended his presentation by thanking Narin for setting a great example for all of those around her and helping to promote a positive and and caring school culture. Congratulations, Narin, on your achievements!

This was an OPEN CUPBOARD COLLECTION DAY. We thank the generous club members who contributed to this effort and Dennis, who kindly delivered the goods to their destination.
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: ***NEXT TUESDAY, 2/18, we will return to Cafe Spiga at noon, where we will welcome as visiting speaker Lindsay Charlop, whose topic is LI Invasive Species Management. There is currently $72 in The Pot. You've gotta be in it to win it! Paul told us that as a result of last week's visit by DG Justin Quaranta, we will form a committee which will be working towards gaining our club a Rotary Citation, which should help us obtain future Rotary grants. Pat thanked Judi for her help in locating a person with a wood chipper which can be brought to the Chandler Estate Park for 8 hours of work. Pat proposed that the next Chandler Estate Cleanup take place on Saturday, March 7th, (tentative date) beginning at 8 AM. Volunteers (scouts, Rotarians, Interactors, Rotaract members, etc.) are invited to come to the park and work for as few or as many hours as they wish. OnMonday, 2/17, The Donations Committee will meet at Panera Bread in Port Jeff Station at 8 AM. The Executive Committee will meet at Paul's office on 2/21 at 7:30 AM. Among other topics of discussion: a review of our 3rd Annual Winter Golf Classic and suggestions for improvement. All members are welcome to attend. Judi asks that you save this date for The Andrew McMorris BSA 1st Annual 5K Walk/Run: March 28th. The Place: The BSA Camp on Sound Ave.in Baiting Hollow. Time TBA. Also planned for this event: a "virtual walk". Judi will provide more details soon. Dennis announced that on March28th, we will also hold a Stuff-A-Van Event at the Setauket Stop & Shop (Rte.25A) from 10AM to 1 PM. Volunteers are invited to share with Dennis their interest in helping out.Bob reminded us that the Italian Rotarians who hosted his visit will be in our area from 5/19-5/29. Al has generously donated the use of his barn on 5/22 for a BBQ with the Rotarians from Italy. Our club members, family, and friends are hereby invited to attend. This should be a most enjoyable event! Bob has met up with 5 students from SUNY Stony Brook who wish to build an active Rotaract Club at the university. We are invited to welcome them to the world of Rotary, and will begin by inviting them to participate in our events and activities.Please note our new Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spring Clean-Up date: Sunday, May 3rd.
