News of the Meeting of November 8th:

Thank you, Open Cupboard donors! And thank you, Dennis & Jim for delivering the donations to their destination.

Today we welcomed Dr. Pam Linden and Jill Snelders as our visiting speakers. Pam is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Occupational Therapy Program at SUNYSB, and is experienced in administering psychiatric residential and case management programs for people with mental illness. Her current research projects include animal assisted therapy-the goals and techniques used with animals to enhance human physical, social, spiritual, and mental health. She teaches and explores the many applications, ethical considerations, and possible consequences of incorporating Animal Assisted Interventions into healthcare and human services treatment facilities. Pam says she does veterinary social work. She consults with Dr. David Hensen of the Patchogue Rotary Animal Assisted Therapy (PRAAT) program, which our club supports, and visits around 150 sites performing animal assistance therapy research. Jill is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is Mather Hospital's Assistant Director of Recreational Therapy. She works with PRAAT, nurses, and doctors and uses the program in the hospital's psychiatric unit, with a goal of introducing animal assisted therapy to the Transition Department and Telemetry Unit as well. She joins Pam in studying how pet visits affect people's moods (patients, visitors, and staff alike) and is in the process of assessing the study's findings on the human/non-human bond and how effectively animal visits enhance the lives of people who come in contact with the therapy animals.

At that meeting, we will meet and honor 6th grader Olivia Schlegel with a Most Motivated Student of the Month Award. Archana thanked this past weekend's Stuff-A-Van volunteers, including Rotarians Ed, Bill,Rich, Erika, Nancy, & Dennis, and these members of Boy Scout Troop # 1776: Eric, Logan, Justin, Matthew, & Dimitri. King Kullen shoppers, again, were most generous.Dennis reported that one woman alone donated a huge cart load of everything possible to this Open Cupboard collection. RYLA meetings are scheduled to take place on Thurs., 11/10 and again on 12/10. Check with Dennis for details. District # 7255 is sponsoring its "Feed LI" projects on Saturday, November 12th in Huntington, Sayville, Riverhead, Hampton Bays, & Queens. For a $40 donation, a volunteer can help package meals for needy families. Check out the District website for more information. Will you be joining us for our Annual Fall Cleanup at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck this Sunday, November 13th- 9AM to 12:30PM? Dennis invites you to come and also bring a rake to donate to the camp. Among the volunteers who've RSVP'd so far, we can expect Rocky Point Rotarians and Rocky Point HS Interactors to join us and a good number of PJHS Interact members, too. Dennis noted that the Rocky Point club has contributed 15 rakes, while our club has purchased new tarps for the camp. Our Executive Board will meet on November 14th at 7:30 AM at Archana's bank in South Setauket. Pat noted that he made repairs to our bus stop at the harbor front but that we'll need to put aside money for more significant repairs to this site (ie., roof & window panel replacements) in the new year.

November is Rotary Foundation Month and marks its 100th anniversary!
