News of the Meeting of March 16th

Rob hosted today's hybrid meeting with 3 members attending in-person at Cafe Spiga and 6 members joining via Zoom plus 1 Zoom guest, Jason Gardner, from Radical Shift Coaching.

Cindy reported that she attended a Zoom RYLA meeting on Thursday, March 11th that was also attended by 124 students, of whom 106 plan to participate in weekend RYLA activities.  Facilitator training sessions will take place on 4/9-4/11 or 4/15-4/17.  More than one set of dates may be necessary if the group of interested youngsters remains so large.  The RYLA students raised via a Venmo meeting $22,000.  Wow!

Nancy requested that members who still owe money for Sergeant's Report fines kindly pay their February fees either in person, by check (P.O. Box 461, Port Jeff Rotary, Port Jefferson 11777), or in cash as soon as possible.

Our speaker, Jason Gardner, a life coach from Radical Shift Coaching, gave an audio-visual presentation via Zoom from Boston.  Currently on a virtual Rotary Club Tour, this transplanted New Yorker began with the suggestion that if you're having a bad day, you should get in touch with Rotary friends -known for being helpers and doers- and start a new project.  Jason entitles his presentation "A Radically Shifted Mindset", which he says is the big secret for living a happier life.  Also known as as escape artist ("Jason Escape"), magician, and performer, Jason has been doing his thing at many festivals and events and calls radical shift coaching "transformation simplified".  The 1st step in transforming your life: be mindful.  He reminds us that during our free time, which can happen in small increments (ie., in the shower), one often has incredible thoughts. Jason notes that Bill Gates takes a month off, and in that time/space, he often can become more creative. When back to work, he can act on his creative thoughts. For our speaker, life is the space between the big moments (ie., during the time you walk to or from your car).  He urges us to be intentional about our free time, no matter how small it is.  He says that we should schedule our free time and offers 2 ways to get in front of your day: 1. The night before, write down one thing you'd like to do. (Create an intention and then take the risk.  If you want to do something, plan to try it.)  Then, when you wake up and do the action, celebrate the whim.  2.  Use your senses to visualize (play out your day).  Get in front of things.  Imagine what will happen next before it happens.  [Jason offered 2 bonuses to his listeners: Bonus # 1: www.TheHoudiniEffect.com; and Bonus #2: a free 30 minute Radical Shift Strategy Session.  Text Awesome to 617.675.5588. ]  He next spoke of the science behind the Radical Shift, referring to the brain's Reticular Activating System (R.A.S.).  The brain: controls sleeping, waking, and attention; acts as a sophisticated filter; screens out the junk; acts like an executive assistant; allows you to focus on what you value; allows you to perceive a threat; and supports you when you set goals.  We need to program our R.A.S. for happiness.  Focus on things that are positive and pleasing. Jason closed his presentation with a favorite quote from his father, Joel Gardner: "The good in me seeks the good in you."  When asked a question about why some people seem unhappy in retirement, he offered that perhaps they are thinking in terms of the legacy they will be leaving behind and suggests that they ask themselves what they want to be remembered for.  What will make them happier?  Perhaps they need to take a risk.  Joel parted with this suggestion: Be Intentional.  For him there are 3 types of days in a week : working or focus days; an administrative day (doing boring but necessary tasks- like paying bills); and free days (no work)- just enjoy.  Jason invites you to stay/get in touch. at Jason@radicalshiftcoaching.com .
Sal did a great job as Sergeant today, asking "Today is...? and Tomorrow is...?" questions.  Among other things, we learned about today being Nat'l. Artichoke Day (the official state vegetable of California) and Nat'l. Panda Day as well as more about St. Patrick.  Sal also collected Happy Dollars, many in honor of the birth of the Mike & Stephanie Sceiford's son, Harvey James, on March 12th at 5:29 PM, who weighed in at 8 lbs.4oz, and measured 22" long.heart Congrats, Steph & Mike!!!   (And now, we wait to see who won the baby raffle prizes.)
   ******************HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!*************************************

Quote of the Week

"  In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety."

                     -Abraham Maslow

Thought for the week:
It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.
