News of the Meeting of October 27th

It was back to ZOOM for today's meeting, which was hosted by Debbie.  While our upcoming Winter Golf Outing Fundraiser was to be our main topic of discussion, we began with some questions and announcements.
*********HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AL!******************
Dennis reminded us that our Annual Holiday Gift Purchase and Wrapping activity needs to be scheduled and preparations made.  Kevin Murray passed the baton to Mike Burghardt, who will be organizing with Vicki at the Open Cupboard  a list of the children who will receive the gifts and the Rotarians responsible for purchasing them.  Vicki will also need to let us know if, due to Covid-19 and other considerations, the gifts should be pre-wrapped or not this year.
Judi requested a club donation for the Boy Scouts of America. Nancy will respond soon with a check.  Our $500 donation will be doubled via a matching grant, and the money will go towards helping at-risk kids.
Yvette reminded our members that the Hope Children's Fund's 16th Annual Bi-Continental Kenya/USA 5K Run/Walk has gone virtual this year and will continue through November 1st.  See the information below, among the Notes & Announcements.
We will NOT be meeting on 11/3.  It's Election Day.
Dennis announced that we will meet a 9th grader from Comsewogue HS on 11/10, who will receive the Most Motivated Student of the Month Award at our meeting.
Mike S. presented today's main topic for discussion: our Winter Golf Classic, currently scheduled for 1/25/2021, with a Snow Date of 3/7/ 2021.  Due to the pandemic and new, very restrictive rules for all restaurants and bars,  we need to rework our original event plans.  Also, one of our venues, C'est Cheese, has closed- a victim of Covid-19.  We'll need to find a replacement site- possibly SeGhar (the old Harbor Grill/Schaeffer's). If we have our event on schedule, among the rules we'll have to enforce: mask wearing for all participants (Mike suggested that we provide masks with the Rotary logo), and short standing around time at each venue. We will need to revise the check-in procedures and rewrite/update our flyer.  Another need: to finalize the last 2 holes and the logistics- moving people around in such a way that keeps them in small, socially distant groups, yet allowing them time to eat, drink, and play the game.  We will definitely need to inquire of the Suffolk Board of Health what is required of us in order to go forward with our event planning.
It has been suggested that we'll need to limit the number of tickets sold (ie., 100).  We can't have too many people hanging around (and taking up space).  Perhaps we can put more holes outdoors, weather permitting.  Another suggestion: that we change the date of our event- push it into early spring.  The main question:  Should we move forward?  We need to be ready to cancel if the pandemic situation requires it.  Should we shoot for a late April date?  Should we plan to use tents outside?  Mike's final summary: before we continue and try to update our event,  we need to check with the Board of Health, add restaurants, and then get working.
Debbie will create a survey that will soon go out to all of our members, asking questions about how/if we should proceed.  Please look for the survey, answer the questions, and return the survey swiftly. We'll require input from as many of our members as possible on how/if to proceed regarding our upcoming golf outing.
We also need to decide on the most successful plan for our weekly meetings now that cold weather is approaching.  Shall we continue with hybrid meetings (ZOOM at noon, alternating with ZOOM at 5:30 PM)?  Please let Rob know your feelings.

NOTES & ANNOUNCEMENTS:
NO MEETING NEXT WEEK, 11/3!  If you haven't yet done so, GO VOTE!
Did you know that our club members have donated over $10,300 ( money, gift cards, etc.) to The Open Cupboard since March?  Please do keep up your much needed and appreciated donations.
Yvette announced the dates for the Hope Children's Fund's 16th Annual Kenya/USA Bi-Continental 5K Run/Walk...Since this is virtual event, participants can register at any time from now until November 1st (www.hopechildrensfund.org) and can run, walk, jog, hop, crawl, etc. the distance anywhere, at any time they choose. The suggested participation donation is $25 p/p.  [Larry and a small group of local folks of all ages used the Port Jeff-Setauket Greenway on Saturday, Oct. 24th, starting at 10:00 AM near PJ Station Greenway entrance. Port Jefferson's Ed Hyshiver won the Gold Medal with a time of 33:40, while Jacquie Coven of Long Beach also won a gold medal with a time of 43:57. PJ Middle School Interact Club member Ryan Filippi and his mother, (Interact's sponsor) Deirdre Filippi, volunteered to oversee the Turn Around Point and hand out water. Meanwhile, in Meru, Kenya, 7 time zones away, on 10/25, hundreds of people turned out, mostly to walk the 5K route. Around two dozen runners competed on the unpaved roads near the Children's Home, with the fastest boy winning the gold at around 15 minutes, and the fastest girl at around 19 minutes. (Remember, these are young Kenyans!)] *In the USA, runners/walkers who can secure pledges of $100 or more run for free. If you cannot participate, you are invited to make a pledge supporting Larry's jog. Donations are welcome at www.hopechildrensfund.org  or % HCF, P.O. Box 387, Setauket, NY 11733. All proceeds go to the support/care of the 96 young residents of the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru.
FYI: Since our club is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, we can go to that office for free masks and thermometers.

***If you have ideas or items to be discussed at our next meeting, let Rob know.  And if you'd like to join one of the club's special committees, let him know this, as well. The more, the merrier!***
*** Watch for Rob's invitation to our next meeting and plan to join us!***
                                  MEANWHILE, STAY SAFE AND WELL!

Quote of the Week

" You miss 100% of the shots you never take."

Thought for the week:
I feel sorry for people who don't have dogs.  I hear they have to pick up the food they drop on the floor.
