News of the Meeting of May 14th

Today was an Open Cupboard Collection Day. Thank you, generous donors, and Dennis & Bill C., who delivered the donations to their destination!

This was also a day to honor and celebrate a very special 8th grader- Joseph Tabasko- as this month's Most Motivated Student of the Month. In addition to his proud mom, dad, and younger brother and sister, Joseph was surrounded and feted by Joe Coniglione, Comsewogue HS Principal (and soon to become Ass't. Sup't. of Comsewogue Schools), and Dr. Michael Fama, Middle School Principal. The latter gentleman explained the lucky circumstances that brought this superlative student to their attention. Joseph and his family had been living in Queens, where he was attending city schools and doing outstanding work in his classes. He was doing so well that he was among a select group to be invited to attend prestigious Horace Mann High School. When his family moved to Port Jeff Station, they looked for a way for young Joseph to be able to commute to this school in the city, but eventually decided that the daily commute would be too difficult. Horace Mann's loss was Comsewogue's gain. Possessing an insatiable thirst for learning, Joseph has been taking and excelling in the most challenging courses on offer, including AP math, and has continued to be a District academic star. Despite his prowess as a student, Comsewogue teachers and students alike are most impressed that he remains a "humble, wonderful young man." And so, selecting Joseph for our club's award this month was an easy choice for them. Congratulations, Joseph Tabasko!

ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: ***NEXT TUESDAY, on May 21st, we will again meet at Cafe Spiga at noon and will welcome as visiting speaker Corinne Trubia, representing Welcome Friends Soup Kitchen. ***This will also be a WOODHAVEN NURSING HOME COLLECTION DAY***. There will be NO MEETING on Tuesday, 5/28, in celebration of a long Memorial Day Weekend!

The pot stands at over $160. This amount will grow until we have a new winner. Will it be you? Ya gotta be in it to win it!

Pat and avid volunteers including Paul and Al have done an amazing job clearing trails and cleaning up the Park at Chandler Estate. They now invite club members to visit and walk through this beautiful space. County Legislator Sarah Anker has already visited. On June 25th, plans are underway to hold a wine & cheese social gathering at the park's entrance in lieu of a regular meeting that day. More on that event soon....Meanwhile,volunteers are still invited to join Pat on Saturdays to continue park maintenance (mostly trimming). Contact him to learn the work hours and specific dates. Kevin, our newest retiree, was congratulated again on reaching this happy stage of life after 39 years as a Mather administrator. ADG Warren Sternberg is now a Stony Brook Rotarian. He hopes to lead this small club to increased growth and activity. He will encourage his club's members to join us with some of our projects. Deb participated in this past Saturday's Interfaith Community Fest at Comsewogue HS. Dennis reminded us that this is the time of year when we present awards and scholarships to outstanding seniors at PJHS, Comsewogue HS , and Mt. Sinai HS - in addition to the Most Motivated 8th Grade Student of the Year Award, and another reward for a superior PJHS Interactor. Will you be attending the 5/16 Gift of Life Gala at Flowerfield, beginning at 6:30 PM? We hope that our members make every effort to fill a table of ten. Cost: $135 p/p (the club will cover half the cost ). Please sign up. Port Jeff Rotary will try to reach a donation goal of $5,000 (private donations most welcome) to sponsor a child this year. If you cannot attend this event, can you make a donation? We want to save a life! (***Today, Sgt. Sharon shared many interesting facts about Gift of Life, its founder, and its incredible reach around the world. Long may this project thrive!***) Also on Thurs., 5/16: the PJ Library is sponsoring its "Tea By The Sea" event. You are invited to enjoy the 1:30-3:30 PM activity at the Village Center's Sail Loft. The next Exec. Board meeting: Friday, 5/17, at 7:30 AM at Michael's office. All members are invited to attend. The folks at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck invite you to visit on Wednesday, May 29th, 5-8 PM, so you can get a taste of life there and enjoy an "Authentic Camp Experience". You'll have the opportunity to reminisce about your own childhood camping memories and learn first hand what the campers here experience on a daily basis. There'll be a BBQ with burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, potato and macaroni salads, and more- with s'mores around the campfire to complete the evening. AND IT'S FREE! To RSVP call 631-981-4364 or email Johneen@camppaquatuck.org You are also invited to compete against Kenyans on Sunday, 6/2, as a participant in the 15th Annual Kenya/USA Bi-Continental Cross Country 5K Run/Walk. The USA portion of this contest/fundraiser takes place at the Port Jeff Sta. entrance to the beautiful Setauket/Port Jeff Sta. Greenway Trail on Rte. 112 (actually beginning near the western end of the parking lot located between Enterprise Car Rental and the 7-11 on Rte. 112). Registration for the competition will begin at 9 AM. The run/walk begins at 10 AM and is open to folks of all ages and abilities. Suggested donation: $25. (Participants who secure more than $100 in pledges will run/walk for free.) All proceeds go the support of the orphans at the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru, Kenya. T-shirts for the 1st 15 registrants/medals for all finishers. (The Kenyans will run and walk at the same time- 7 time zones away.) The date for our upcoming HABITAT BUILD: Friday, 6/21! ***Volunteers are still needed.*** Eleven members have already signed up! The participatory cost is $100 p/p, of which our club will pay half. CONTACT JOHN PERKINS about your availability and interest in this great activity. Paul has volunteered to act as John's Ass't. Captain for this Build. ***Kindly save this date: Monday, June 10th, for the 21st Annual Rocky Point Golf Tournament, to be held at St. Georges Golf & Country Club in East Setauket. Registration & Lunch will take place from 11 AM to 12:45 PM, and the Shotgun Start is at 1 PM. The cost p/p is $300 before April 30th, and $325 p/p after that date. Dinner only: $75. Cocktail Hour with appetizers & hors d'oeuvres will be followed by dinner, including a carving station, and lobster/prime rib dinner.
