Today, Rich Bennett provided our members with a brief "new member profile". Rich, who is originally from the south, has spent 7 years living and working in NY, preceded by 12 years in New England and 2 1/2 years in Paris. He had been working in the biotech field in Paris and returned to Boston to continue working in that field- for a different company. His task at that time (with co-workers) was to build a machine that could identify the makeup of an air sample (detecting air organisms) and adapt the machine to detect toxins and proteins. Rich has since worked at a number of biotech firms, one of which brought him to LI as lab manager and senior research scientist. Once here, he took Real Estate classes, which led him to eventually pursue work in the real estate field. He currently works in conjunction with Caldwell Bankers out of Islandia, specializing in developing and selling commercial real estate, such as the available vacant space near the Islip Court House. Rich provided a few definitions of terms used by commercial realtors, such as "gross lease" -where a landlord can lease space under terms that are all-inclusive regarding charges (ie., taxes, insurance, maintenance, etc.), and "triple net lease"- where the charges are additional, might be based on the square footage of the property and "rentable area"and "useable area" (the proportional area the renter can use, including elevators, etc.). Rich offered sage advice to would-be landlords, including the admonition to not get complacent with the landlord-client relationship, to make repairs immediately when a problem arises, to constantly keep up the property, and to respect the space leased. He invites interested members to consult him about commercial real estate at any time.

Have you sold all of your RAFFLE TICKETS yet? If not, please do so IN A TIMELY FASHION. We have only 3 1/2 weeks left to obtain the needed $$$$ to fund our favorite projects for this year. Remember: the money earned via the ticket sales not only helps us help our community but also enables our club to pay 1/2 the cost for members to participate in many of our favorite activities (ie., The Habitat Build).The Raffle Drawing is 9/22, so the time to sell the rest of your tickets is NOW!The Comsewogue Public Library will host its 5th Annual Volunteer Fair on September 20th from 4-6PM. Susan has successfully completed the purchase and distribution of backpacks and back-to-school supplies to the locations where they were needed/requested.(Bargain hunters: try Five Below in Riverhead for great buys of quality materials.) One of today's guests, Stony Brook Rotary President Nancy Fogg, requested that we consider helping her club out in their upcoming fundraiser. She is seeking jewelrythat you no longer wear, need, or use and are willing to donate to their "Bubbles & Baubles" event on 10/22. She asks you to share your former pre-loved treasures with the community while helping Rotary contribute to the community. She'll happily accept costume jewelry, gold, silver- any jewelry in any condition. Broken pieces, unmatched earrings, cufflinks, etc., will be sold for crafting. Nancy invites you to clean out your jewelry boxes with items that are just taking up space. Donations are tax deductible. All proceeds will go to local charities.
