News of the Meeting of January 5th:

Today, we welcomed as our guest speaker Rebecca Kassay, Program Coordinator of Students Taking Action for Tomorrow's Environment (S.T.A.T.E.), an environmental stewardship organization for local student volunteers, ages 13-18. Having interned at Avalon Park and Preserve's (Stony Brook) intensive camp program for 2 summers and been inspired by campers' enthusiasm and the vast success of this program, Rebecca encouraged Park Director Katharine Griffiths to create a year-round organization devoted to environmental preservation activities for local youth. Beginning in January, 2011, this program now has a base of 200-250 young volunteers. Rebecca strives to make S.T.A.T.E. as enjoyable, intriguing, and rewarding as possible, and she looks forward to sharing the marvels of nature and community involvement with her volunteers. She seeks links to other environmentally conscious non-profit organizations, planning with them hands-on, rewarding projects. Through this program, volunteers coming from a variety of local school districts are provided with an outlet for nature-rooted curiosities, creative energy, and their desire to strengthen their relationship with the local community and ecology. This free youth volunteer program aims to empower and educate students via their involvement with short and long term projects that reinforce the importance of life-long environmental stewardships. Rebecca runs 10 projects a month. Past projects have included gardening, fence construction, species studies, water testing, soil sampling, and building bird houses and bee boxes. Rebecca continues to network with community organizations as she seeks new students and new projects in which they can immerse themselves- all to benefit both the youth and the environment. A number of our members responded positively to her call for help in growing her program by offering referrals. (In addition to directing this youth program, Rebecca and her husband own The Fox & The Owl B&B on Main Street.)

ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: Next week, 1/12, we'll honor 8th grader Dennis Jourdain, our newest Most Motivated Student. In addition, we'll officially induct as new Club Corporate Members the Principals of both PJHS and PJMS, and will be conducting our monthly OPEN CUPBOARD COLLECTION, too. THE POT NOW STANDS AT $13- with 51 cards left to pick from! The next opportunity to win will be at next week's meeting, 1/12. Ya gotta be in it to win it! (FYI: our last winner, Dennis, who won well over $500, decided to use his winnings to gift a Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck scholarship to a future camper. Kudos, Dennis!) This Saturday,1/9,we will hold our next Stuff-A-Van Event at Mount Sinai's King Kullen. Thank you, volunteers! Congratulations to Ed DiNunzio for being named Man of the Year by the Times Beacon Record and to The Open Cupboard's Vicki Rybak for being honored by the same newspaper for her community service! (In the articles about these two local heros, Rotary scored lots of great publicity.) In the next few weeks, prepare to welcome a number of new club members, including a corporate contingent from St. Charles. Good luck, Erika, who is presenting a seminar at Whole Foods about detoxifying or "revitalizing your body's detox pathways for optimal well-being"! The Town of Brookhaven's Women's Advisory Council invites you to nominate a Brookhaven resident or worker who deserves to be honored at the Town's 2016 Women's Recognition Night, on 3/16 at Town Hall. Award categories and nomination forms can be found at the Town's website. The deadline for nominations is 1/22. Bob Huttemeyer is still calling for future speakers. Kindly volunteer yourself or others who would be interesting future Rotary guests.
