News of the Meeting of January 10th

Today we honored 8th grader Michela Rabeno as our Most Motivated Student of the Month. She was accompanied by her grandmother, Dina, her science teacher, Adam Bouchard, and the PJMS Principal, Dr. Bob Neidig. Bob introduced Michela and explained why her teachers selected her for this honor. In addition to maintaining a tremendously high GPA (in the upper 90's), Michela is noted for being kind-hearted and well-mannered. She was described enthusiastically by her social studies teacher as being "a spunky go-getter who strives to do her absolute best", a strong leader who motivates fellow students to participate, and "a light that brightens the atmosphere wherever she goes". According to her ELA teacher, Michela begins each class prepared to excel. "Her attention to detail, thirst for knowledge, and, above all, the respect she shows her peers while in class, helps distinguish her as one of the most motivated students we have." Michela constantly challenges herself and others to become better students and better people. Caring and considerate, she sets the tone as a strong role model. Michela's Latin teacher praised especially her work ethic and her willingness to ask questions, and referred to her as "a delight to teach and 'a teacher's dream'." Her math teacher praised Michela's persistence and dedication to quality work daily, while Mr. Bouchard noted the high standards she sets for herself, and her eagerness to learn and willingness to ask questions to delve further into topics being studied. Bob concluded by pointing out how proud his staff was of Michela, and cheered her on with this remark: "Keep up the great work!"

Other visitors included about-to-be-inducted members John Perkins (St.Charles Corporate Member) and Vincent Malizia, of A-1 Roofing, Stephanie from HSBC in Port Jeff Station, and Roberta from Rocky Point Rotary.

At that meeting, Larry Hohler will bring us an update on the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru, Kenya. Archana thanked all members who attended the RYLA Fashion Show on January 5th. We filled 2 tables and had several members star as models. The event was a great success- 220 people enjoyed the festivities. Roberta, the Rocky Point Rotarian who was on the RYLA planning committee reported that the 10th and 11th graders made a most commendable effort at creating this gala. Kudos to Dennis for his work on promoting both RYLA and this fundraising event! You are invited to a District TGIAF (Thank God It's Almost Friday) Networking Gathering in Plainview (135 Old Country Rd.)on January 26th, 5:30-7:30PM. Another invitation: The Rotary Foundation Awards Luncheon will be held on January 29th at Windows on the Lake in Ronkonkoma from 12-4 PM. Archana proposed that our club follow Nancy's example (originally used by Mather Hospital) to highlight a club member each month in our Bulletin and call our effort "Humans of Port Jeff Rotary". This idea was agreed upon by the members present. Dennis asks that you save this date: May 21st. That's when we will have our Annual Spring Clean Up at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. At Al's urging, other clubs participating with us in this activity (ie., Middle Island and Rocky Point) will be invited to join us in the purchase and donation of leaf blowers for the camp. Another invitation: On Wednesday, May 17th, the District will hold its Centennial Celebration at Whitby Castle in Rye, NY. Nominations for Brookhaven Town's 31st Annual Women's Recognition Awards are now open. Community groups such as ours, businesses, and individuals are asked to nominate women they believe are deserving of special recognition for their outstanding service to the community as a professional or volunteer. Eligible candidates must live or work in Brookhaven. All nominations should include a resume or equivalent document and 2 letters of recommendation. The event will be held during Women's History Month on Thursday, March 30th. Categories for nominations include: Business; Communications/Media; Community Service Volunteer; Arts; Education; Government; Health Care; Legal Profession; Military/Law Enforcement/1st Responders; Religion; Science; and Sports. The deadline for nominations is Fri., January 20th. Forms are available at www.brookhaven.org or by calling the Div. of Women's Services at 631-451-6146.
