News of the Meeting of March 12th

Today was an Open Cupboard Collection Day. Thank you, generous donors, and Collector/Deliverer Dennis!

We were pleased to welcome and honor our newest Comsewogue Student of the Month, senior Sophia Azzara, who was accompanied by her father, John, Comsewogue HS Principal Joe Coniglione, and Deputy Comsewogue District Sup't. Jennifer Quinn. We learned that Sophia is a super student with a GPA just shy of 100%. She has also distinguished herself as an athlete, and, as a member of Athletes Helping Athletes, she works with special needs students. She will be one of the Directors of the upcoming popular annual variety/ talent show event, this year entitled "A Night For Jason 32".

Sophia spoke to and invited us to attend this extravaganza, a fundraiser that benefits Friends of Karen, a nonprofit that supports families with children battling life-threatening illnesses. Friends of Karen provides financial, emotional, and advocacy support to its clients. The students of Comsewogue HS have been presenting this amazing variety show for 32 years in honor of a local youngster who lost his battle with Leukemia at a young age. The date and time: Friday, March 15th at 7 PM. The cost of attending will be $15 at the door, $12 online. Sophia plans to attend Syracuse University after graduation from Comsewogue. ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: ***NEXT TUESDAY, on March 19th, we will meet again for our regular luncheon at Cafe Spiga, where we'll welcome a representative from the TESLA Science Center at Wardenclyffe as our guest speaker. ***This is also WOODHAVEN NURSING HOME COLLECTION DAY***On March 26th, we will hold our end-of-month Evening Meeting at Pat Sabo's office (6 Medical Dr., Port Jeff Sta.-5:30-7 PM) We have started a new pot (since Bill won over $750 in the last one). It now stands at $16. This amount will grow until we have a new winner. Will it be you? Ya gotta be in it to win it! ***According to our new Club Bylaws, in order to maintain your membership in the club,YOU NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY 2 ROTARY-RELATED ACTIVITIES PER MONTH, ie., meeting attendance, on-line makeups on the RI website, donating to the Open Cupboard and /or Woodhaven Nursing Home, volunteering for a Stuff-A-Van event or at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a Habitat build, attendance at any Committee or Board Meetings, and the like. Please notify Yvette of each make-up at your earliest convenience via a note to hohlerlj@aol.com or the Make-Up Report Sheet, which will be passed around at each regular meeting for members to report when and how they made up previously missed meetings)*** March is Women's History Month. This is also World Water/Sanitation Month. This Saturday, March 16th, we will have our next Stuff-A-Van Event at the Mt. Sinai King Kullen. Bill needs fellow-volunteers to join him and help out any time between 10 AM and 1 PM. Boy and Girl Scouts or teens seeking community service credit are most welcome! P.E.T.S.will take place on the weekend of March 21st-23rd in Whippany, NJ. Paul can only make the 1st day and is seeking someone- perhaps an Exec.Board Member- to attend and represent our club. The District pays for attendance at this event. Pat, who is coordinating our newest club project , the clean up of the 40-plus acre Chandler Estate property (behind the Mt. Sinai Congregational Church and cemetery) on North Country Rd., will meet with the Suffolk County Commissioner on Wednesday. (Al facilitated this upcoming meeting thru Sarah Anker, who represents this area.) The Commissioner seemed positive upon hearing about the proposed project. Pat will set up a date soon for members to have a "walk thru" of this Suffolk County Park. It has a number of walking trails and a field that ends at the Sound. All have become rather overgrown with foliage and debris that make it difficult, if not dangerous (think ticks and poison ivy), for park users to enjoy. Pat would like us to take the lead in cleaning up and turning this park into something akin to Avalon Park in Stony Brook. While Paul will try to arrange for use of a storage structure for our equipment, Pat is now seeking volunteers who will help clean up and widen the trails, trim vines, etc. Perhaps other community groups (ie., boy & girl scouts, the Young Marines, and youth seeking community service credit) will eventually join our endeavor. More soon...This year's Rotary District Conference will take place in Saratoga Springs, NY- at the Gideon Putnam Resort- from May 2nd to May 5th. You are invited to register to attend on line. Let Michael know if you're interested in participating. A R/T coach bus will transport interested adults (a few seats remain available at this time). The District Conference Youth Portion is welcoming Interactors. The All District Youth will be presenting on Saturday morning. The youth conference fee is $550 per student. Youth Conference forms are available on the District Website: www.district7255.org. The Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce Coalition is offering a 2019 Small Business Improvement Award Grant. Chamber members are eligible to submit letters of request for the award. Contact Jenn for more info. On Thursday, March 21st, come see Judi be honored with the highest honor given to civilians by the Boy Scouts of America (Suffolk Chapter): The Silver Beaver Award. The ceremony and Gala will be held at the Stonebridge Country Club in Hauppauge. The cost of attendance is $75 p/p. The club will be purchasing a sponsorship.
