Today, Rob hosted our hybrid meeting at Cafe Spiga (aided by Mike B.), with 10 members in-person, 4 members via Zoom, and 6 in-person guests. Among our guests, we welcomed this month's Comsewogue Most Motivated Student, Emily Gaide, her parents, Jennifer and Brian Gaide, and Assistant Principal Amanda Prinz. We also welcomed Mike Sceiford's guest, Dee Earle-Browning, prospective member and owner of Your CBD Store on Rte. 112 in Terryville (590 Patchogue Rd., PJ Sta.) and Christine Grobe, Stony Brook Rotarian and semi-retired lawyer. Among Rob's announcements: The Executive Board will meet on Friday, February 18th, via Zoom at 8 AM. TOMORROW, February 9th, at 8 AM the Golf Outing Committee will meet with Mike S. via Zoom. Contact him for the link in order to attend. All members are invited to attend both upcoming meetings. TODAY WAS OPEN CUPBOARD COLLECTION DAY. Bill agreed to drop today's donations off. If you missed the opportunity to bring your donation, you can deliver it to Dennis' front porch (305 Emerson St.) this week and he'll drop it off at The Open Cupboard. Pat reported that we will have a Clean-Up at the Chandler Estate in March (clearing, wood chip spreading, etc.)- the exact date and time remains TBA. Sal told us about the Thank You note received from a Mt. Sinai resident, grateful for the care we have given and are giving to this beautiful 43 acre parkland, located behind the Mt. Sinai Congregational Church and stretching to the Sound. Yvette made a brief presentation and reminder about the ongoing work of The Hope Children's Fund, the 501c3 of which she is a part, which currently cares for 86 orphans residing in the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru, Kenya. She told the brief history of this enterprise, which in the USA involves all volunteer fundraisers, and in Kenya 12 paid employees who care for the youngsters. She spoke of HCF's founding and incorporation in 2002, the Home's opening in 2005, and its motto: "Education is the Key", as well as of some of the Home's most recent graduates, including a (female) medical doctor, a Physician's Assistant, a pharmacist, an architect, hairdressers, engineers of all sorts, salespeople, etc. She also invited our members to become mentors to the current orphans (at a cost of $365 per year). The most recent fundraising project success concerned a GoFundMe page request which yielded around $43,000 in order to purchase a beautiful mini bus. Club members, friends, and families are invited to continue to follow HCF's progress: www.hopechildrensfund.org (and make donations). Jen introduced Comsewogue's Assistant Principal, Amanda Prinz, who introduced our MMS honoree, 9th grader Emily Gaide. Emily was selected mostly because of her wonderful, friendly, bright personality and amazing smile. A great student leader, she worked on a school float, organizing a team of fellow students to get the job done- and done well. Emily loves mathematics and appears to be gifted in the subject. This youngster is a girl scout and an "all around awesome person"- quite deserving of our award. |
