News of the Meeting of December 14th

At today's luncheon at Cafe Spiga, President Rob welcomed 9 club members and 4 guests.  This was also an Open Cupboard Collection Day.  Thank you, generous donors, and Bill C., who delivered the goods to the pantry.

Rob reminded us that there will be no meetings between Christmas and New Years, and next Tuesday, 12/21, will be our last meeting for 2021.  At that meeting, Nancy Uzo will present the Annual Treasurer's Report.

Bob H. reported that our club members have contributed over $14,000 to The Open Cupboard since March, 2020- and this is in addition to the monthly donations of necessary goods!  Bravo, generous Rotarians!

Jen invited us to gather our families and attend the remaining Port Jeff Sta./Terryville Chamber of Commerce-sponsored "Polar Express" Shows on Fri., 12/17, 6-8 PM, and Sat., 12/18, 12-2PM, 3-5 PM, and 6-8 PM at the Chamber's Train Car (corner of Rtes. 112 & 347).  The cost of $15 p/p covers the movie, popcorn, a special cookie, hot cocoa, and a visit from Santa after the movie (bring your cameras!).  You're invited to wear your PJ's to this event.  Masks are required inside.  There will be a limit of 30 people at each show.  Jen also invites our members to the Chamber's Holiday Party on 12/20, 6-8 PM.  It's free, but guests are asked to pre-register on the Chamber's website.

Rob invited Jen to introduce our guests, including our Comsewogue HS Most Motivated Student of the Month honoree, 9th grader Alyson McKay, her proud parents, Debi and Joe Mckay, and the school's Assistant Principal, Amanda Prince.  Ms. Prince then presented Alyson, who was this month's selection by all of the 9th grade teachers.  When Ms. Prince asked why they selected Alyson for this award, her teachers "simply gushed about this standout student". (In case she looked familiar to our members, we were reminded that Alyson was awarded our MMS Award when she was in the 6th grade.)  A great student academically, kind, helpful, active, and cheerful were some of the adjectives used to describe her. Alyson, whose favorite school subject is math, is also a Girl Scout, and she helps out at the Chamber of Commerce's events at the Chamber's train car.

Rob passed around a Thank You letter from Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck's Executive Director, Alyssa Pecorino, for our donation to the camp.

Mike S. reminded us that the date of our upcoming fundraiser, the Annual Winter Golf Outing/Pub Crawl in the Village is fast approaching: February 5, 2022.  Erika has already sent out to our membership emails promoting this event, with the request that we share the information with family, friends, and neighbors- the more, the merrier.  All club members are asked to promote this activity.  Now Needed: raffle and other prizes (the suggestion was made that we could re-gift holiday gifts that we will have received but do not wish to keep). People should be invited now to sign up to participate and/or donate sponsorships.  We should remind people that we are a 501c3 organization, so donations are tax deductible.  Volunteers of all sorts are needed.  Every club member is asked to help out one way or the other so that we can, through this fun event, raise awareness and as much money as possible.  The golf outing's profits account for around 1/2 of our annual budget.  So: spread the word, offer to help, and be prepared for the expectation of all hands on deck in the New Year!

Rob played the role of Sergeant today, posing Christmas Trivia-type questions, and collecting dollars for wrong answers (ie., What were some of the 5 top-grossing Christmas movies of all time?  A few of the answers: "The Grinch" and "Home Alone".)  Among the "Happy Dollars" announcements, we learned that Mike is going home to Erie, PA for a weekend Christmas celebration; Bob H. and Ami are heading to see family in S.C. for the holidays; Daphne Dzvonar won 1st Place in her very first gymnastics contest effort; Melissa and Colton Dooley celebrated birthdays last week; and Kim has just moved into her new home.  Al offered a "Sad Dollar" for absent club members and would like to see more of you in attendance at our meetings in the New Year.

Again, Kudos to Kim for producing another gorgeous, informative "Harbor Light".  If you haven't yet updated your information for the publication's back page, please do so.  Also, to have an event or Rotary membership news listed in the next  "Harbor Light", email Kim: kzettwoch@portjefflibrary.org .

Have a healthy, enjoyable week- and make it a productive one!

                      MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR!
