This was an Open Cupboard Collection Day. Thank you, donors, and especially Jim, Bill, & Dennis, who delivered the goods to their destination!
Today, we welcomed and honored PJMS 6th grader Peter Murphy as our newest Most Motivated Student of the Month. Peter was accompanied by his Reading teacher, Chuck Ruoff, his proud parents, Melissa & Peter Murphy, and Principal Dr. Robert Neidig. Dr. Neidig prefaced his introduction of Peter by assuring us that this honor is well-deserved for a number of reasons, including the fact that this young man boasts a tremendously high GPA of 97 and is considered by his teachers to be particularly well-mannered and respectful to all. Peter's Science teacher noted that he is a friendly, outgoing, hard working, dependable student who always contributes to class and is known to lead by example. Possessing an innate curiosity about how things work, he is able to apply his knowledge to solving problems. In addition, "he is a really nice kid that people just like to be around." Peter's Family&Consumer Science teacher pointed out that what sets him apart is his ability and wilingness to help others achieve. Also, "he is an independent thinker in a collaborative world." His Social Studies teacher remarked on the fact that he was one of five students that went to Regionals last year for the History Bee. Calling Peter an extraordinary student, she added that he is always conscientious about his class work and homework and is very caring and helpful to his peers, truly going out of his way for others. Peter's Writing teacher also lauded his willingness to participate, helpfulness to others, and good manners, noting further that he is an active member of the student council. Dr. Neidig concluded his comments about this student by thanking him "for setting a great example for those around him and helping to promote a positive and respectful school culture."
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: There's now $195 in the pot waiting to be won. YOU could be our next winner. Next opportunity: our May 17th luncheon at Cafe Spiga, when Archana will serve as our visiting speaker and will enlighten us about "Banking in the 21st Century". Archana reported that this past Saturday's Stuff-A-Van event resulted in a really good collection of donations (a completely full vehicle!) for The Open Cupboard. She again thanked the Rotarians, Interactors, Boy Scouts, and others who volunteered their efforts to make this activity so successful.Our Spring Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Cleanup Day will take place THIS Sunday, May 15th. Chores will include painting,cleaning windows,sanding railings,clipping bushes, planting flowers,etc. We expect around 100 participants,including Rotarians,Interactors,Boy Scouts, and others. After breakfast at the camp, the kids and adults not yet given chores will learn what their assignments will be. You are invited to attend the District Training Assembly on 5/21 to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Melville (located on the east side of Round Swamp Rd., just south of the LIE exit 48 in Plainview). Incoming DG MJ Fitzgerald will lead the Assembly. All costs will be paid by the District.Raffle Time is fast approaching- Get Ready! Our 2016 Past President's Dinner & Raffle Drawing will take place on September 22nd (SAVE THAT DATE!)at Carnival Restaurant in Port Jeff Station. MJ Fitzgerald,our incoming DG, invites you to her Installation Dinner on June 23rd at 6:30PM at Royalton Mansion in Roslyn Heights. The cost will be $85 p/p. Please let Archana know if you're interested in attending. The 9/17 Dragon Boat Race: We still need the commitment of 20 Row-tarians (10 of them women) by June 6th, when the payment is due. Please contact Archana or Debbie if you can participate in this enjoyable event on our club team. (*Note: if you learn at the last minute that you cannot take part, you are responsible for finding a replacement- not necessarily a Rotarian.) Debbie is working on organizing club participation in a Habitat Build. Michael invites you to the Great Annual Shredding Party that he sponsors with Saranto Calamas and Eric Cherches. The date: June 4th. Time: 10:30 AM- 1:30 PM. Place: the parking lot at 640 Belle Terre Rd. (across from Mather). Delicious food will be served along with wine, beer, and music while the shredding is being accomplished. Nancy thanked Debbie and Amy for volunteering at Mather's Walk/Run for Hopeon Saturday (Amywon a raffle prize!). Debbie suggested that we consider helping out at next year's event.The PJ Times Beacon Record invites you to participate in its 40th Anniversary Celebration: a cruise on the PJ Ferry "Barnum" on Thursday, 5/19, 6:00 PM-9:30PM. This event will include dinner catered by Elegant Eating, a wine bar, music & dancing. Space will be limited, so please RSVP promptly by calling 751-7744.
