News of the Meeting of March 23rd

Rob hosted today's hybrid meeting with 3 members attending in-person at Cafe Spiga and 7 members joining via Zoom.  Alas, we had no visiting speaker.

Members who still owe money for Sergeant's Report fines, kindly pay your February fees either in person, by check (P.O. Box 461, Port Jeff Rotary, Port Jefferson 11777), or in cash as soon as possible.

Will you be participating in our Virtual Bingo Night Fundraiser that will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, March 31st, from 7-8 PM.?  Have you shared the news of this upcoming event with your friends and family? One can sign up for 1 Bingo card at $20, 2 cards for $40, 3 cards for $50 ($10 savings!), 4 cards for $80, or 6 cards for $100 ($20 savings!).  Four games will be played using the same card(s).  Proceeds benefit Theater Three and our club.  The prizes: $20 -$50 gift cards. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/PJRotaryBingo and fill out the registration form, especially including your email address.  Pay in person at a meeting or by check to our P.O.Box.  Questions? Contact Kim at kzettwoch@portjefflibrary.org . Kim announced that we have hit the $990 mark in bingo card sales.  She is looking to beat the $1,000 mark made by Stony Brook Rotary when they held their Bingo fundraiser.  Please sell more cards!

Rob announced that our Raffle date has been moved to June.  More about the Raffle Sales soon...

Bob H. is looking for potential guest speakers.  Contact him at Bobhuttemeyer@gmail.com with suggestions.

Rebecca was our excellent Sergeant today, stumping our members left and right when asking her "vaccine-beamed questions".  We learned a lot, ie. the first vaccine developed against a disease?  Answer: Smallpox, which was eventually eradicated in 1980; also, the only 2 polio-endemic nations remaining in the world:  Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Rebecca also collected a good amount of Happy/Sad dollars.  Bravo, Rebecca!

Safe travels to Jen and her family, who will be headed for South Carolina for another BMX competition.  Best of luck, Willie & Daphne!  Also, we wish a healthy, enjoyable trip to Sharon and Michael who will be visiting family in S.C. and then moving onwards to New Orleans for a week or so at their time share.

You are invited to become a member of the Port Jeff Village Community Garden Committee, which has already begun meeting and is in its planning stages for the village's 1st such project to be achieved on village parkland in upper Port. The garden is expected to elevate the sense of place for residents and visitors, and will undoubtedly be supported by the local business community.  The garden will provide a space for residents to grow their own local produce.  The Community Garden Committee, which already includes some of our club members- Sal and Rebecca- is seeking other members with experience related to gardening, who have an interest in community outreach, nutrition, and food security, who can attend 2-3 online meetings per month (approx. 1 hour each) and occasional on-site meetings, who can perform independent tasks/research/outreach between meetings (approx. 2 hours per week), and who are able to commit at least 1 year on the committee.  Interested?  Contact trustee-kassay@portjeff.com.

Rebecca invites us to get acquainted with HOMETOWNHOPEPORTJEFFERSON.ORG. Hometown Hope provides resources and support in times of need to all residents of the Village by promoting a movement of spreading kindness. It "strives to uplift through wellness, resilience, and compassionate understanding in our community."  Among the services/goods it will provide: meal boxes; home deliveries; and the like for those suffering illness, loss, etc., as well as help for healthcare practitioners during the pandemic. You can also sponsor a family.
