Today was the monthly Collection Day for the residents of Woodhaven Adult Home. Thank you, donors, and also Tom for collecting and delivering the goods.
Our visiting speaker was Rebecca (Becky) Kassay who inspired us to want to join her and "Be the Change". Becky and her husband have been running a B&B in the village for several years. She formerly worked at Avalon Preserve for 7 years, where she created and directed a program for teens, teaching them about ecology. Becky is currently involved in creating a documentary series that will begin filming next week. Her series will be based on a popular TV program that introduced to the public people engaged in doing "dirty jobs"- necessary jobs that we probably wouldn't want to perform. Becky plans to spotlight community service volunteers and "doers of great things". She plans to jump into volunteer groups of all sorts (mainly unsung types) and participate in and document their activities up and down the east coast, from New Hampshire to Washington, DC. Becky has connected with a production company that will be working with her every weekend. This company is donating its time and equipment to her project. She will welcome tapping into the Rotary network, which provides so many different community services on a volunteer basis. Becky has been and continues to be a professional Volunteer Coordinator. Her show, "Be the Change With Rebecca", will connect viewers, and, she hopes, with the help of Rotarians, will create even more volunteers willing to provide services for their neighbors. Becky assures us that she's not in this project for making money. She wants to highlight the good people and their projects and help these volunteers to bond and learn from one another. Becky will travel and live in an RV as she films her show, which will be all about community. She is now ready to begin a crowd-funding site on social networks. She welcomes nonprofits and volunteers to contact her. Becky plans to self-distribute her completed documentary on AmazonPrime and the like (perhaps, later, on HULU) . Meanwhile, she invites us to check out her Face Book page, "Be the Change With Rebecca". Her first stop on her filming journey in mid-July will be in New York, where she will film about "The Billion Oyster Project", headquartered on Governors Island. She plans to present to the public mini-episodes at first, until she is ready to put together a lengthier film. We wish her luck with her project.
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: ***NEXT TUESDAY, on June 25th, we will have an evening meeting at Al Kopcienski's barn (across the street from Cafe Spiga) from 5:30-7PM. This will be followed by a visit to the Rotary-refurbished Chandler Estate Park- and, perhaps, a tree planting. John Perkins asks that you please register on line. Co-Capt. Tom Donlon will welcome you at the build site. There's a 40% chance of rain, so dress accordingly- though you might be working indoors (and there's a 60% chance of clear weather, right?!) In addition, there's still an open spot for another volunteer. Contact John or Tom if interested.***CHANGE IN DATE:Next week, on June 26th, last year's Exec. Board and the incoming Exec. Board will meet, 4 PM- 6PM, at Burrito on Main St. in the Village. All members are welcome to attend. Sharon recently presented our $1,000 Scholarship to Mt. Sinai HS graduating senior Samantha Zhang, who responded with a lovely Thank You note. Dennis passed around the beautiful 2018-19 PJ Middle School Yearbook and highlighted the pages on which photos from our Most Motivated Students of the Month Honorees could be found.Judi asks that if any of our members picked up her copy of Harbor Light at last week's meeting, please contact and return it to her. It had some important papers inside. Tom announced that the club's "Little Library" by our Harbor Bus Stop is ready to be set up - once the rain stops. Nancy reminds us that THE DUES ARE NOW DUE!!!! Thefolks at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck invite you to visit on Wednesday, May 29th, 5-8 PM, so you can get a taste of life there and enjoy an "Authentic Camp Experience". You'll have the opportunity to reminisce about your own childhood camping memories and learn first hand what the campers here experience on a daily basis.
