News of the Meeting of April 18th
 
Today's guest speakers representing the NY State Citizen Preparedness Corps, 1st Lt. Alex Wiedenbaum and Sgt. Syed Ahmed, gave an audio-visual presentation about Disaster Preparedness that was extremely detailed and thorough, given the short amount of time available to them for this significant topic. Alex pointed out the types of disasters we need to be ready for: Natural- those we have no control over- such as hurricanes, floods, thunder & lightening storms, earthquakes, etc.; Man-made- such as failure of structures and terrorism; and Technological- such as those caused by cyber crimes.  She pointed out that metropolitan NY has a high risk level for each of these disasters, and that emergency resources might not be readily available, which is why we need to develop personal emergency plans- the sooner, the better.  We need to have a family discussion about what to do in the event of a disaster and to plan together how to remain safe.  Some of the things needing to be agreed on in advance: each family should pick 2 places to meet, 1 outside the home and 1 outside the neighborhood; an emergency communication plan must be established; and an out of town friend or relative should be selected as a "point of contact". Making preparedness plans includes learning what services or plans already exist for organizations each family member is involved in (schools, workplace, daycare or eldercare centers, etc.) and coordinating family plans with existing plans. We need to know where to get additional emergency information (ie., by registering with www.nyalert.gov), to become familiar with warning sirens, emergency alert systems (via radio,TV, etc.), and wireless emergency alerts. We must be aware of signs of terrorism (If you see something, Say something) and be able to safely pass on to the proper authorities in detail what we've seen or heard. Alex next presented ways to prepare for fire safety, and stressed the need for and proper placement of home fire extinguishers and alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and the like. She spoke of the need for us to know where and how to operate our home utilities (ie., to be able to turn them off if necessary)and which tools might be needed in an emergency. Our emergency plans need to include preparation of backup or digital copies of all important papers/documents and "go kit" items packed and ready for rapid evacuations (including such necessities as 1st aid items, medicines, a whistle, closed-toe foot-ware, nonperishable foods, water, hygiene supplies, garbage bags, paper, pencils, duct tape, cash) for each family member and pet. And these supplies, even if not used, must be replenished and restored periodically. Useful preparations would also include learning basic first aid.  As their presentation time was running out, Alex and Syed asked for questions and handed out a brochure about safeguarding NY from terrorism, an Emergency Information Handbook prepared by Homeland Security & Emergency Services, an Emergency Supplies Kit Checklist, and a Certificate of Completion for attending this preparedness presentation.

It could be YOU who wins the pot. Next opportunity: our ***4/25 gathering at St. Charles, beginning at 5:30 PM, when we will, among other things, celebrate the Induction of New Members. ***PLEASE NOTE: This evening meeting will be in lieu of the usual mid-day luncheon at Cafe Spiga. Ed reminded us about our invitation to attend the Coastal Steward Event on Sunday, 4/23, 10 AM to 4 PM- a family friendly, educational activity. Saturday, May 6th is the date of our next Stuff-A-Van Event, 10 AM-1 PM.  Please volunteer to help out. This is also the date (5/6) of Mather's Walk for Hope.  Nancy is hoping you'll volunteer to help at this event, too. Ed will be leaving us soon- retiring to Florida.  Join us on Monday, May 8th , 5:30-7:30 PM, at Cafe Spiga to celebrate with him. Spouses/significant others are welcome to attend, as well. It's time to start thinking about and planning for our Annual Raffle Ticket Sales Event- hopefully to begin before this month ends. Each individual ticket will still cost $40, but we can also sell 3 for $100, 7 for $200, and 15 for $400. ***SAVE THIS DATE: *SEPTEMBER 14th = OUR ANNUAL PAST PRESIDENTS DINNER & RAFFLE DRAWING (& 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLUB's FOUNDING).This auspicious event will take place at Savino's Hideaway, corner of North Country & Pipe Stave Hollow Roads in Mt. Sinai. More info will be forthcoming soon. Kings Park is sponsoring an "End Hunger in Kings Park" event tomorrow, April 19th at Kings Park HS from 2:30-4:30 PM. The cost of participation is $40 per volunteer. This feel-good activity involves creating food packages for people in need. Thousands of these food packages can be put together in a very short period of time due to positive team work. If you plan to attend attend The Gift of Life Dinner Dance on May 10th, 6:30-10:30 PM, at The Timber Pointe Mansion (398 Great River Rd.) in Great River (at a cost of $100 per person in advance, or $110 at the door), please note that  our club has already bought a table (at a cost of $50 per member, with the club matching that amount). If you wish to start another table, contact Ed a.s.a.p.   Reservations are due now.  On May 17th,  the District will hold its Centennial Celebration at Whitby Castle in Rye, NY. [Did you know that collectively Rotary has spent $1 Billion on humanitarian causes worldwide?!] More soon...Let's not forget that we will have our Annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spring Clean Up on May 21st, and will be joined by neighboring Rotary and Interact Clubs as well as, perhaps, by a contingent of youth from Comsewogue HS.  Our chores will include painting and preparing picnic tables and mattresses for summer use. Please let Dennis know if you can volunteer at this event.  Dennis noted that the camp will soon purchase a tractor & leaf blowers, and he will be inviting other clubs to join us in reimbursing these purchases. Our club will  donate $500-$1000 for this purpose. We've been invited to the installation of incoming DG Wendy Walsh (Seatuck Cove) at the Rock Hill Country Club on 6/3. The cost? $75 p/p. Our Club will participate in our annual Habitat Build on Friday, June 9th. The cost will be $50 per member, with the club matching that contribution. Bring family & friends (older than 16).Let Debbie know of your interest.There is a tentative possibility for us to join Rocky Point Rotary for a New Officer Installation Dinner on Tuesday, June 20th- at Savino's Hideaway. The new DG has offered to attend and perform the inductions.  The cost will be $40-$50 p/p including tax & tip. Spouses/significant others are welcome. More soon...
