Prior to the Main Event, a donation check for $500 was presented to guest Larry Hohler, President of Hope Children's Fund, Ltd., which supports the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home, an orphanage supporting nearly 100 young folks in Meru, Kenya. Shortly thereafter, President Michael presented a Paul Harris Award to Yvette Hohler on behalf of the club. Both Hohlers felt, momentarily, like rock stars and are truly grateful for the recognition. Next, a check for $1,000 was presented to Nancy Uzo, representing Mather Hospital, for the wonderful services provided by Mather to the community. Thank you, PJ Rotarians, for your generosity.
The Main Event: discussion of ideas ensued regarding our 2nd Annual Winter Golf Classic (to be held February 9, 2019- with March 23rd as the snow event/back-up date). Event Committee Members have already begun planning vigorously. Again, we will offer a 9-hole contest at popular indoor locations around the Village, with each $100 player fee including the rounds of golf, 3 free beer/wine/drink tickets, free appetizers at each venue, a Hole-In-One contest, a Best Costume Contest, a Best Food (at participating venues) Contest, an Awards Ceremony (cash bar/free appetizers), Raffles, etc. So far, we have lined up sites for 7 of the holes. The remaining 2 sites are being sought. Paul suggested that Schaeffer's is so large that 2 holes can be placed there, making the trek from hole to hole a bit easier for participants. As for the holes, 6 are already built and ready to go. Both LISEC and St. Charles have offered to build the other 2 holes. Now a Check-in and Closing Awards place that can fit over 100 people comfortably must be secured. Several possibilities were proposed, ie., The Village Center's 3rd floor grand party room (pro-bono, but requiring separate preparation and catering planning), unless the large room in Danford's main building can be made available at no cost. Brochures, fliers, and our website will be updated. Several Committee Members plan to invite restaurateurs to help cater the closing party. Plans continue, including arranging for more photos to be taken, building lists of possible participants, preparing Thank You Notes and Certificates, collecting raffle items, selling raffles, increasing publicity, and the like. Michael proposed that we plan a 2nd Club Assembly next month to follow up on suggestions and proposals made today. All club members will be expected to help out in as many ways as they can in the planning and the running of this event so that it can build on the great success of last year's event.
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: NEXT TUESDAY, 10/30, we will NOT be lunching at Cafe Spiga. INSTEAD, we will be holding an ***EVENING MEETING*** ,5:30-7 PM, at Paul's BRANCH FUNERAL HOME (Rte. 25A, Miller Place). This will be a great networking-style opportunity for veteran and new members to get to know one-another better. Bring family and friends to this wine & cheese-type social event. (Attendance is especially important for members who are unable to attend noon meetings!) On this occasion, COSTUMES ARE ENCOURAGED (but not essential) ! According to our new Club Bylaws, to maintain your membership in the club, you need to participate in any 2 Rotary-related activities per month, ie., meeting attendance, donating to the Open Cupboard and /or Woodhaven Nursing Home, volunteering for a Stuff-A-Van event or at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, a Habitat build, attendance at Committee or Board Meetings, and the like. This is a RYLA Senior Advisor Project where participants learn stuff like how to use checkbooks, etc., and is meant for teens who are about to graduate from high school and who will be leaving home. It's a full day event with limited registration. Youth who are interested must pre-register. For more info, contact Michael. Pat reported that our Bus Shelter at the Harbor is in sad shape. Panes need to be replaced, preferably before the weather gets much more inclement. Pat & Al will be working on refurbishing this shelter and will, undoubtedly, welcome members' help. Kathy Taveira's BNB is sponsoring a Coat Drive. Comsewogue Public Library is collecting gently used or new shoes in a box . (The proceeds will benefit the Miller Place Robotics Team.)
