News of the Meeting of June 2nd

Today we met again (and probably will for a while into the future) via Zoom at 5:30 PM, with Paul hosting.  Thirteen of our members were able to attend this virtual meeting, as well as two guests/perspective club members, who were invited by Judi: Dawn Friedland-Perez, owner of "Wisdom of the Aged", a provider of relief for all types of caregivers, and Robert (Rob) Marder, a physical therapist who works especially with seniors.  Our third guest, ADG Warren Sternberg, was also our visiting speaker. For those of you who missed the meeting, know that we missed you, still love you, and hope that you are safe and well.  Take care!
NEWS & INFORMATION HIGHLIGHTS:  Paul reported that Thursday's (5/28) Chandler Estate clean-up was great.  Al's borrowed monster wood-chipper created tons of mulch material as downed trees an branches were fed into it.  Thanks & Kudos to Al, Pat, Bob, Eric, Rob, Joe Schwartz (Al's son-in-law), Paul, and Jen and her two kids, Daphne and Will- (with a special nod to the latter three, who provided beverages and snacks), who did an amazing job!  Photos will be provided soon.  Bob reports that our members continue to donate towards baskets of food for families and send checks to buy super market gift cards for clients of The Open Cupboard.  We have raised over $1,600 + $70 in direct donations, so far.  All contributions are always welcome.  Contact Bob for more info. Have you noted the new Open Cupboard Food Needs List on our site? (Thanks, Dennis, for procuring the list!) Cindy attended RYLA Weekend on line via Zoom, and noted that the meetings welcomed 200-250 high school participants. They enjoyed hearing inspirational speakers on Friday and Saturday evenings.  The youngsters are hoping to be able to go to RYLA Camp in July, but whether or not this comes to pass will depend on the Governor's decision regarding the safety of opening summer camps. Pat was delighted to announce that his office has been open since Monday. Bravo! ADG Warren Sternberg, whose home club is Stony Brook Rotary, reported that all of the District's clubs continue to meet via Zoom- some meeting every week, others 2X a month, with all sorts of virtual meeting arrangements.  A number of clubs have members who decided to donate the dollars that they would normally be spending on a luncheon to a worthy cause, ie., a local food pantry. District meetings are now held via Zoom and are an hour in length. Warren shared information-all tentative- about important upcoming District events.  He asked that you save July 18th for the District Awards Night & Installation of our new DG, Jacki ("Jax") Yonick, of Glen Cove Rotary.  The hope is that on this date, Rotarians will come together at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, 5:30-8:30 PM, for the celebration. The cost will be $20-$25 p/p and will probably include appetizers and drinks.  Note that there is an $8 per car parking fee until 5 PM, with parking free thereafter.  It is suggested that, despite the parking fee, Rotarians might want to come earlier, as it is a lovely venue to stroll through. *Please keep in mind that due to changing Covid-19 conditions and regulations, the above-mentioned plans may have to change.  Check the District website for updates and event registration. Also, kindly save these dates: October 9th, October 10th, and October 11th- for the District Conference. Very tentative plans call for separate local activities each day at different parts of LI. Rotarians can choose to attend on any or all of these three days (it's Columbus Day Weekend).  It is possible that Friday will include a dinner in Queens; Saturday may see events held at Hofstra; Sunday's activities might take place at The Cradle of Aviation Museum & Gilgo Beach. Again, all events are in planning stages and will depend on progress with control of Covid-19. The next District Leadership Meeting will take place via Zoom on Thursday, June 11th, 7:15-8:15 PM.  The next Rotary Leadership Institute at the Melville Marriott-an opportunity to learn all about Rotary- is scheduled to take place on October 17th, 8:30 AM-3 PM. Certificates are given to attendees. All are invited to participate.  Warren reported that our District applied for and successfully received an R.I. Covid-19 Grant of $25,000. Of this amount, $12,000 was donated to LI Cares, $12,000 went to NY Cares, and the remaining money was distributed to local food banks.                    Warren reminded us of the need to share an update about our Interact Club advisors, which Cindy will do. Cindy announced that on June 4th, we will be awarding two PJHS graduating seniors with $1,000 scholarships. The one for Community Service will go to Gavin Chambers; the one for Interact will go to Charlotte Kajuwski. Yay, great students!  Bill and Jen announced that the *RAFFLE TICKETS* have been ordered and will be ready in a week.  Jen and Bill will try to call all of our members to arrange for delivery of their bundle ( 25 tickets per person to be sold- more tickets available, as needed) to each club member by all possible means (mail, house drop, etc.)  Time to get into tickets-selling mode, folks!  Our community depends on YOUR success!

**If you have ideas or items to be discussed at our next meeting, let Paul know.**                                   *** Watch for Paul's announcement of our next virtual meeting via Zoom and plan to join us!***                                                     MEANWHILE, STAY SAFE!
