News of the Meeting of February 23rd:
Today, club member Erika Jurasits, DO, MPH, and proprietor of Integrative Healing Wellness, Inc., spoke to us about Well-being and Detoxification. Erika, an osteopathic physician with over 20 years of experience treating patients with conventional medicine, spoke of her transition to functional medicine because she has come to believe that the body should be treated as a whole rather than as individual parts. The whole body treatment focuses on improving the mind, body, and spirit by using the body's own innate ability to heal itself and creating a sense of complete wellness. In order to improve people's health, Erika works collaboratively with her clients on the 5 pillars of health: hormone balance, nutrition, detoxification, fitness and relaxation. Erika spoke about the effect of environment and genetics on us and noted that we usually contact medical specialists when we are already experiencing the signs and symptoms of disease. Her emphasis tends to be on healing via detoxification or cleansing the body by taking away the things that bother you. Symptoms of toxicity include fatigue, joint pain, headaches, bloating/fluid retention, food cravings, constipation, puffy eyes/dark circles, allergies, canker sores, inability to concentrate, etc. (We all admitted to suffering some, if not all of these.)The issues needing to be addressed include these types of stress/toxins: physical (due to surgery, trauma, etc.), chemical (due to our exposure to household, beauty, and other such manufactured products), and emotional. Erika interviews her patients thoroughly, has them undergo a variety of medical tests, and discusses with each the path that seems best suited to creating a healthy body. Usually, a specific, balanced diet is key to wellness. Detoxification often calls for cleansing and removing personally harmful substances from one's diet such as caffeine, alcohol, dioxins, barbituates, organophosphates, pesticides, paint, exhaust fumes, etc.  Consuming certain foods (broccoli, cauliflower, raw garlic, onion, etc.) helps the cleansing process. Other foods need to be avoided, ie., grapefruit & citruses, white foods, etc., and replaced by organic whole foods.  In treating the whole person, Erika believes she is more successful at helping her clients move towards wellness.
