News of the Meeting of November 22nd:

Today, we welcomed as our guest speaker Lorraine Kimmey, Chair of the Suffolk County Women's Business Enterprise Coalition (SCWBEC). Lorraine explained that SCWBEC is an incorporated 501c3 nonprofit agency established in 1990, whose mission is to empower and connect women-owned business throughout LI and to promote, encourage, and support its members, helping them succeed in business by providing them with opportunities for mentoring, networking, and professional development. She invited us to visit this agency's website: www.SCWBEC.org to learn the location of each monthly general meeting (held on the 2nd Thursday of each month). At the meetings, usually attended by around 70 members, business owners can learn, grow, and prosper. SCWBEC affiliated with Suffolk County in order that its members could more easily compete with others in the trades (ie., construction, manufacturing, etc.) and, evolving with the times, provides a connection to get members WBE certified. At the meetings (no cost), presentations are devoted to topics of use and interest to attendees. There are now 1100 members. The 16-member Board are all volunteers. Providers of free services can be listed on the agency's website. To become a member of SCWBEC, one must own at least 51% of a business and either work or reside in Suffolk County. (Or one can become an associate member coming from outside the county.) There are no dues, just sponsorships, raffles, etc. Men are welcome to attend meetings. Lorraine provided us with a packet that includes: basic info about the organization; an application to become a member; information about SCWBEC levels of/opportunities for sponsorship; an invitation to attend the Annual Business Showcase on Tues., Apr.25th, 2017 at The Meadow Club; and an invitation to the Annual Holiday Breakfast on Dec. 8th, 8-10 AM, at Trio's at Holbrook Country Club. At this event, attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy for the children of the Northport VA Veterans of Combat and, in support of Women Veterans, a donation of unwrapped personal care items/toiletries. Businesses are also invited to donate an item or basket to be raffled at the breakfast. Check out the SCWBEC website for more info. about all activities.

ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS: There's now over $405 in the pot waiting to be won. YOU could win it. Next opportunity: our 11/29 luncheon at Cafe Spiga. At that meeting, we will also receive a Port Jefferson School District update. Archana announced that this year's Christmas Adopt-A-Child list has been sent out this past week to our members! If you haven't received your list yet, please contact Kevin A.S.A.P. If you have received it, please let Kevin know that, too, and certainly let him know if you will not be able to participate.This project calls for us to buy gift items ($40 per child) suggested by the list for the children assigned to us. We will be wrapping the gifts purchased together on Tuesday, December 13th from 2-4 PM in the PJHS cafeteria. We will then deliver the gifts to The Open Cupboard. A fellowship gathering to celebrate the successful completion of this project will follow at a place TBA. ***Kindly note that we will have our annual holiday get together & gift exchange on Thursday, December 8th at the Crazy Fish Restaurant, beginning at 5:30 PM. (This means that there will be NO LUNCHEON ON TUESDAY, December 6th!) On Sunday and Monday following Thanksgiving, you are invited to join Linda Gavin and Amy Lund in decorating our Club Christmas Tree that will be displayed at the Village Center reflecting the theme: Rotary Helping Humanity.
