Rob hosted today's meeting, which was a hybrid: 3 of our members and 5 guests attended in person at a bit after noon inside Cafe Spiga, while 11 attended via Zoom. Our guests included PJ Middle School Principal Dr. Robert Neidig, PJMS teacher of English (and Interact Club sponsor) Deirdre Filippi, PJMS Most Motivated Student of the Month Elizabeth Campo, Elizabeth's mom, and prospective club member Kim Zettwoch from PJ Library's Children's Services. Rob has sent out via email the list of upcoming club meeting dates through 4/20/21- all to begin at 12:15 PM. If you haven't received it, kindly let him know at your earliest convenience. You will be able to download and import the iCalendar files to your computer's calendar system in order to more easily Zoom weekly. Also, Rob reminded us that our Holiday Gifts for the youth clientele of The Open Cupboard have to be delivered by tomorrow between 10AM and 1 PM (Contact Michael Burghardt and his elves if you need help with delivery). Another reminder: please do not wrap the gifts, just carefully label each with the child's number. Nancy asked that you make a photocopy of or scan your gift receipts, send them to her (Nuzo1@Northwell.edu), and let her know where you'd like your reimbursement check sent to (home or business). Al would like to know who will be wrapping the gifts. Sharon offered to call Vicki to find out the answer to his question and will let us all know. Bob reported that our members have donated a total of $11,474.47 in cash, gift cards, and a variety of goods (ie., boxed milk) to The Open Cupboard to date. Thank you, donors, for your marvelous generosity! (Keep it up!) Rob also reminded us that during the Sergeant's Report, fines and donations will be noted each week, and bills will be sent at the end of the month to members who participated in the Report. Checks can be sent to Nancy, our Treasurer, % Port Jeff Rotary, P.O.Box 461, Port Jefferson, NY 11777. Dennis introduced Dr. Bob Neidig, who, in turn, introduced the Most Motivated Student of the Month honoree from PJ Middle School, Elizabeth Campo. A 7th grader, Elizabeth has maintained a tremendously high GPA. In addition, according to all of her teachers, she is a dedicated, hardworking student, who is a most valued contributor to class discussions. Elizabeth's math teacher noted that Elizabeth is in an accelerated program, and she is incredibly focused on the work at hand. Other teachers noted that she is an outstanding student, who is always smiling. She encourages her peers to try to follow her lead, to ask questions, and to participate more fully. Thoughtful, respectful, and kind are three adjectives repeatedly used by her teachers to describe Elizabeth. This student is always working hard at giving back to her community. Dr. Neidig concluded his remarks by noting that Elizabeth demonstrates the best characteristics of a generous person, always looking out for others, kind to all with whom she interacts, smart but modest, setting a high personal standard that is appreciated by all who know her and that serves as a great example for fellow students to try to emulate. Great job as first-time Sergeant, Sal! |
