Today, Rob presided over our hybrid meeting from Cafe Spiga, with 5 people attending in-person and 11 attending via Zoom. Rob introduced Kimberly Zettwoch (pronounced "Zettwock"), a frequent guest at recent meetings, who was scheduled to be initiated as a new club member today. Sharon reported that a new person named Judith was hired by TBR newspapers to write about local happenings. Judith is apparently very interested in knowing what's going on locally and will report on Rotary activities and events among other things. Dennis reminded us that he will deliver your donated goods to The Open Cupboard on February 2nd. Please drop your donations on his front porch any time the week before the delivery will be made. See the list of items needed by the pantry on this site. (Red beans are currently a favorite need.) Rebecca spoke about an interesting project currently going on in Riverhead that involves baskets made available to beach visitors that are to be used to pick up trash while walking in the beach area. She suggested that perhaps the Village would be interested in involving the public in a similar project- and that perhaps our club might purchase baskets with our logo for this purpose. Rebecca will research this idea further and will report back on it. Cindy attended a recent RYLA meeting and was amazed to learn that 198 students from 48 schools are interested in attending the spring RYLA Weekend. The weekend planners will have to figure out how, in light of Covid-19 safety requirements, to safely accommodate these youth during the weekend. Mike Sceiford offered kudos to President Rob for his ability to coordinate efforts on our behalf and keep our club running with members attending meetings in whatever manner they prefer. In these difficult times, Rob is doing a most commendable job! Regarding the Annual Golf Classic: Danfords proposes a tent for our use in May and holding much of the event outdoors. We'll have to make a decision soon about this important fundraiser: Should we hold it in the Spring or table it for Post-Covid times? Rob will soon send out to all members a survey to learn our thoughts on this activity and other suggestions for fundraising, ie., virtual Bingo games. He has just sent out the Minutes from the 1/22/21 Executive Board Meeting and asks that ALL members review them. Yvette asked about a rumor that our club will be sponsoring a Bicycle Hill Climb in Port Jeff as a fundraiser. Rebecca remembered that a recent guest speaker sort of proposed this idea. As a Village Trustee, she will look into this as a future possibility. Rebecca was Sergeant this week- and a most effective one! She did a good bit of research about the U.S. Presidents, and through her questions, we learned a lot, and she collected much money in fines as well as donations/happy dollars. Bravo, Rebecca! Rob asked Sal to introduce Kim Zettwoch, as he was her sponsor for club membership. Rob then formally inducted Kim, following a brief ritual of questions and offered information about the rights and duties of membership. Kim then presented information about herself in a most interesting manner. The Head of Children's Services at the Port Jefferson Free Library since 2014, Kim had previously worked at the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton (the 2nd oldest public library on LI after the Brooklyn Library). Being a librarian is actually her 3rd career. She had previously been a kindergarten teacher and the Project Mgr. for a manufacturing company. Also, when her dad was a race car driver at the Riverhead Raceway, she was a member of the pit crew. Kim continued to keep our interest by playing "2 truths and a lie" in order to provide more of an introduction to who she was/is. When speaking about her current job, Kim pointed out that the PJFL actually serves 3 communities- Port Jeff, Mt. Sinai, and Miller Place- making it "a really big small town library", and often collaborates with neighboring Comsewogue Public Library. Interested in, among other things, books, literacy, elementary education, DIY projects, building, crafting, sewing, and graphic design, she loves her job, which allows her to incorporate so many of her interests into it. Kim also brings with her a background in project management, fundraising, budgeting, and social media. She hopes that her membership in Rotary will exploit and extend her interests and looks forward to getting to work on a number of our club's committees. WELCOME, KIM! |
