News of the Meeting of March 8th

Today, Rob hosted a regular meeting at Cafe Spiga, joined by 17 members plus our PJ Middle School Most Motivated Student honoree, her parents, her math teacher, Meg Ryan, Interim PJMS Principal Jim Nolan, PJ School Dist. Sup't. For Business Sean Leister, and prospective/returning club member Jackie Brown.

Among Rob's announcements:  Reminder: Our Golf Classic (Putt & Pub Crawl) will take place one month and one day from now (!) in the Village on Saturday, April 9, 2022.  All members are expected to contribute by getting a foursome to join up or by having a business or individual sponsor our event AND by obtaining gift baskets (from businesses or associates) or items for our Gift Basket Raffles (of $100 value). Donations must be dropped off by March 31st at a weekly meeting or at the home of Dawn & Rob Marder (12 Woodstork Dr., Mt. Sinai).  The Marders are eagerly awaiting your baskets/goodies to be made ready for raffling off at the event. (These baskets might be assembled at an upcoming General Membership meeting, similar to our Holiday Gift Wrapping Event.)

A listing of General Membership Meeting Roles and Responsibilities has been sent out to all members.  If you have questions/comments, contact Michael B. or Rob.

Today was an Open Cupboard Collection Day.  Thank you, donors, for your generosity, and Dennis for conveying the goods to their destination.

Yvette shared some news of the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children's Home in Meru, Kenya.  Of the 86 youngsters now being cared for at The Home, 17 are currently available for mentorships with folks in the USA- families with whom they can correspond. You can become a Mentor for an annual donation of $365 ($1 per day). Interested? Contact the Hope Children's Fund Mentorship Chair, Aida Mann, at 631-470-6351 for a list of available youth, and send a check to Hope Children's Fund, Ltd, (HCF), P.O. Box 387, Setauket, NY 11733.
You are also invited to read the just-published Spring '22 newsletter and learn more about the orphanage, by checking out www.hopechildrensfund.org .

Pat invites you to join a group from Maryhaven on Wednesday, March 30th, between 9AM and noon, to perform some cleanup at the Chandler Estate.

Rebecca invites all to visit the Village Center's 2nd floor, where you can enjoy exhibits about the Village Suffrage Movement as well as a history of a revered Port Jeff woman, the late Nan Guzzetta, whose incredible costume collection has served the community for many, many years.

Deb reminded club members to pick up the now-available, beautiful Golf Outing posters, brochures, and other info to use for publicizing this event far and wide.

Mike S. announced that he'll be holding a Golf Committee Meeting TOMORROW3/9, at 8 AM via Zoom.  Contact him for the meeting link.  All are welcome to attend.                                                        The Village will be hanging a banner across West & East Broadway at Rte. 25A advertising our Golf Outing.  Come and take a photo of the banner and then share it on Face Book and wherever else your family and friends are likely to take notice.

Mike also announced that a client has made an anonymous donation of $1,000 to our club.

Mike B. noted that the club's 1st Membership Committee Meeting, held last week, was quite successful.  This committee will be looking at members' classifications in order to work on creating a more diverse membership.  A membership satisfaction survey will come out in April.  Please be on the lookout for it -and respond.  The committee will be performing a prospective member analysis (analyzing our club and the community).  It has been proposed that new members be assigned Rotary mentor/buddies.  Meanwhile, Sharon will soon be phoning all members to make sure they are correctly listed (for attendance purposes).

Kim introduced PJ Middle School math teacher Meg Ryan, who, in turn, introduced our newest Most Motivated Student honoree, 6th grader Olivia Andriani.  Ms. Ryan explained that Olivia, an excellent student academically, was selected for our award due not just to her academic excellence, but especially for her rather admirable personality traits.  The teacher explained that she sees Olivia during a 1st period class, when most of the students seem not quite fully awake and ready to learn, yet this youngster is always alert, smiling, and ready to actively participate in class.  Olivia is also always prepared as well as ready to help out her classmates.  She is "super smart" and highly motivated- providing a great role model for her peers.  Jim Nolan, Interim Principal of the PJMS added that the Andriani family, which includes at least one other Most Motivated Student Awardee, is outstanding, as well.

Our "lovely Sergeant" today was Mike S., who thanked Kim for actually creating the questions (with answers provided) that he posed to our membership.  In honor of International Women's Day, the questions dealt with some of the great American women in history.  Among other things, we were reminded that in 1932 Amelia Earhart was the 1st woman to fly solo across the Atlantic; Sally Ride was the 1st woman to go into outer space; and Wyoming was the 1st state to allow women to vote. Mike (again, with Kim's help) collected many dollars with these trivia questions.  Many more dollars were collected for happy or sad reasons, including, among the happy ones, that Jen and son Willie have just returned from Texas, where he competed on a national scale in another BMX competition; Rebecca and her husband tried out curling with the LI Curling League and might be continuing with the League; Cindy's son is returning home for winter break, and she'll be headed upstate soon to visit with another of her youngsters; Jackie Brown is returning to our club; and Olivia Andriani's family donated $100 to our club.  Among the sad dollars: the news that Judi is still a patient at Mather Hospital.
We all again send our Best Wishes for a speedy recovery to Judi.
